Effects of alcohol for a pregnant woman

Despite the policy of prevention against the dangers of alcohol consumption during pregnancy, a survey reveals that many pregnant women continue to consume. Stephanie Toutain, professor at Paris Descartes University, said that the concept of abstinence is not well understood.

The results of this study demonstrate the need for awareness of the risks associated with alcohol intake, dice the hope of conceiving a child and even more so during pregnancy, by an information campaign to shock such as those against smoking.

To obtain the views of pregnant women on alcohol consumption during pregnancy, Stephanie Toutain, a lecturer at the University Paris Descartes, CESAMES (Research Centre “Psychotropic, mental health, society”, University Paris Descartes – CNRS – Inserm), became interested in the exchange posted on internet forums.

Analysis of the responses of 42 women showed that the concept of abstinence is not well understood. “The information is poorly distributed and heterogeneous Toutain says Stephanie. Health professionals often evade the issue of alcohol unless it is asked by pregnant women. They have divergent speech and do not always seem
sensitized about or reluctant to address for various reasons: the fear of blame pregnant women, the taboo of female alcoholism, lack of awareness of services that can support a pregnancy, lack of time, etc. . “.

Yet so does the health of the unborn child. The fetal alcohol syndrome is the ultimate affront to prenatal exposure to alcohol. This disease is particularly responsible for dysmorphia, growth retardation and severe mental retardation that affects 8000 newborns 800 000 births in France. Note that the risk of delivering a child with depends on the dose ingested and the danger exists from the first drop of alcohol.
In this study, 20% of Internet users recall the consequences of alcohol consumption during pregnancy and 6% only know the consequences. The other women are not aware of the risks and think that alcohol intake does not represent a danger to the baby. They refer most often to their mothers. Evidenced in this
message: “My mother continued to drink two glasses a day throughout her pregnancy, and we are normal” (Erika, 25, executive assistant). According to the survey, this type of
answers is that of women with a high school education and whose mother drank alcohol during pregnancy.

This research demonstrates the importance of increased public awareness of the consequences of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Stephanie Toutain advocates an information shock as those against smoking or to road safety by introducing, for example, the striking difference in size between the
brain of a healthy child and that of a child suffering from fetal alcohol syndrome.
