Exercising Throughout Pregnancy

Exercising throughout pregnancy is recommended, but what are the benefits and what signs should you look for when should stop exercising.

Exercising throughout pregnancy should be considered, as it is recommended that pregnant women should exercise as long as they are healthy and that their doctor approves. There are many benefits of exercising while pregnant, these include the following:

·         Feeling both physically and emotionally better

·         Helps to prevent women from gaining too much weight and can help women get back to their pre-pregnancy weight more easily.

·         Helps to build stronger bones, muscles and joints.

·         Helps to build stamina that can help to make labour easier.

It is important that pregnant women make sure that they are eating correctly and getting enough fluids. It is best to eat small meals throughout the day; however it is important to remember when exercising you will need to eat more calories in order to supply the baby.

There are some precautions that should be taken when exercising during pregnancy. Firstly, the intensity of the exercise should never be higher then it was before you got pregnant. Yoga, walking and aquatic exercises such as swimming are great forms of exercise during pregnancy. Pregnant women should not take part in any form of exercise that will cause changes in their weight distribution, balance or coordination. It is important to always think about the baby first and never do anything that could harm or injure the baby.

It is recommended that pregnant women make sure that they stay hydrated, avoid heavy lifting and stop exercising is they feel tired. There are also some warning signs that pregnant women need to be aware of when exercising during pregnancy. These include the following:

·         Excessive tiredness

·         Dizziness

·         Shortness of breathe

·         Contractions

·         Decreased movement from the baby

·         Increased or rapid resting heart rate.

Remember before starting any form of exercise you should always consult and seek advice from your doctor first, especially when pregnant, think of you and your baby!
