Face Transplant

The first American to whom she was given a total face transplant said he had used well to his new appearance, in his first public appearance on Monday with doctors whooperated on him.

Dallas Wiens, 25 and originally from Texas, appeared with sunglasses and black chinto give a press conference with the doctors who operated in the Brigham andWomen’s Hospital Boston (Massachusetts, northeast).

“My face seems natural, as if it had been me, “ Wiens said, but admitted that someparts of his face was still swollen and that he should continue his rehabilitation to rebuild their nerve function.

“I can never express the magnitude of what was done, what they gave me, “ he added, thanking the donor’s family, which is anonymous.

Wiens, who is an electrician, was burned to the ground face in November 2008 when confronted with a high voltage cable. Burns completely erased features of his face.

Operation was conducted in March by a team of 30 people led by the plastic surgeonBohdan Pomahac, for whom this is the first full face transplant performed in the United States.

The transaction, valued at $ 300,000, lasted 15 hours and was funded by the U.S.Defense Ministry under its research support for disabled veterans.

The first full face transplant, which included the eyelids and lacrimal system wasperformed in France in June 2010.
