Food, Health, and the State of Things
It can be a battle to eat the right foods when cheap, tasty foods with no nutritional value are constantly being marketed to you. This article is about the struggle and some of the reasons we are in the predicament we are in.
Eating fresh, organic foods when possible is important to me, but I still find myself slipping and eating things that I know will not be optimal.. especially when my blood sugar gets low and I want to get something quick. I’ve been thinking about how I want to meet someone who is aware of what their body needs to thrive. It’s a war zone out there when it comes to health. Ya know, we’ve gotten so far away from what God (if you will) intended our bodies to consume. Commercialized farming, processed foods, mass marketing, etc. A holistic practitioner named Paul Chek put it this way: “If it needs to be marketed, you probably shouldn’t be eating it”.
It can be difficult, I think, when partners aren’t on the same page. One person brings home garbage to eat while the other is trying desperately to change eating habits that have been ingrained from early childhood. It’s crazy really. Lunch food in schools, commercials that target children, and then foods are marketed towards those that are health conscious when really they aren’t fit to feed anyone.
Okay, I may be rambling a bit but I’ll wrap this up soon. Nationally, we are a mess. People are constipated, eating foods that they are allergic to and completely oblivious to the signals their bodies are giving them. Hormones are out of whack. Chronic fatigue syndrome, emotional disorders.. and people just pass it right on to their kids. They rationalize it by saying to themselves that they deserve more cake, coke, or a second and third helping of garbage. Really? Because our priorities are upside down, we deserve to poison our bodies and in turn our spirits?
Really though our nutritional situation is just a symptom of the larger picture. A society that is a product of the west’s “age of reason” to an extreme. It was a productive time in humanity’s history, but equally, if not more so, it’s led to destruction and dissension. Pulling us out of our bodies and the earth underneath our feet and into our heads to the point that we declared ourselves superior to the natural working order of things. Genetically modified foods, commercial farming, synthetic vitamins and minerals because our food supply cannot provide what our bodies need for example. Spiritually we extracted the mystical, and sought pre-packaged religious experience – easy to fit in on a sunday morning and devoid of an art form that takes decades to establish.
