Getting to Sleep
Ideas on how to get to sleep.
Sleep is extremely important, it is vital that each person gets enough sleep every night, most people should sleep 7 to 8 hours a night, but this varies from person to person, some people may require more sleep, and others may need slightly less.
Lack of sleep can increase stress levels and the risk of getting diabetes. It may lead to obesity, sleep deprivation can reduce brain function, and it can have many other harmful effects on the body. This is why we must ensure that we get enough sleep every night.
Sometimes however, we want to sleep, but are simply unable to. That is where this guide comes in. In it I have some tips that should help you to get to sleep on those unwanted restless nights. Without further ado, here they are:
- Don’t take naps during the day, this will make it more difficult to sleep at night. If you absolutely must sleep during the day, keep it short, around 15 minutes is best.
- Don’t drink coffee, or anything containing caffeine during the day. A cup when you wake up is OK, but after that don’t drink any more, or they caffeine will keep you up at night.
- Wake up and go to sleep at around the same time each day. If you keep a regular pattern your body will adjust and enable you to go to sleep at a certain time, and wake you up at a certain time.
- Exercise during the day, this will tire you, so you won’t have as much energy to move around when you want to sleep.
- Drink warm milk before you go to sleep, milk contains an amino acid that will help you relax, if the milk is warm it will relax you even further.
- Turn off the lights. If you have lights on, it will make sleeping more difficult as the light may .
- Sleep when you are tired. If you try to sleep when you are not tired, you probably won’t be able to sleep at all.
- Don’t think. Try to clear your mind. If you are thinking about the day’s events, or what will happen tomorrow, you will find it difficult to sleep and will probably end up lying in bed for hours.

Thanks for the tips! I’ll keep these in mind next time I can’t get to sleep.
