Harmful Effects of Plastic on Environment!

Wide range of synthetic organic solid material is known as plastic and is manufactured as industrial product. Plastic is a polymer with high molecular mass and contains colors or other synthetic compounds to enhance its flexibility, tolerance and appearance.

Wide range of synthetic organic solid material is known as plastic and is manufactured as industrial product. Plastic is a polymer with high molecular mass and contains colors or other synthetic compounds to enhance its flexibility, tolerance and appearance.

Although initially plastic gained lot of popularity due to its use as plastic bottles and plastic bags it is also criticized due to its effect as a pollutant.

Plastic industries are flourishing at flash rate and the molding and dye making industries are also dependant on the usage of plastic but the harmful effects of plastic on environment are thought provoking as well.

Let us have a quick look at some harmful effects of plastic on environment:

  • When most of the plastic bags are used they are thrown in landfills or garbage that spoils the environment. Even when subjected to burning they emit toxic fumes that are harmful for inhalation.
  • Plastic is non-biodegradable and decomposition of plastic takes about 1000 years.
  • Animals who eat plastic bags that are thrown in garbage suffer through disease and even the cases of death have been recorded.
  • Petroleum is used to produce plastic bags and as a resource is becoming more and more expensive.
