How to Overcome Chronic Pain
When living with chronic pain, many people will go through a lengthy process of visiting family doctors, specialists, second opinion doctors. Others will utilize the techniques of alternative medicine such as massage therapy, yoga, biofeedback efforts and soothing baths.
Often, after all other causes are ruled out and the person is still in pain, there will be a period of attempting to use pain medications to just get through the day. This can become a dangerous practice though, since consistent use of drugs often means decreased effectiveness. Often the pain medication will have side effects that are less than pleasant. Side effects can include things like drowsiness, slurred speech, and stomach upset.
Another alternative, depending on the type of pain is to use alternative treatments. Common examples include massage. Trained massage therapists whether standard practitioners, or those using some of the more exotic techniques, including pressure point work have been very beneficial in allowing chronic pain sufferers to experiences relief. At the very least, massage will usually allow the client to be able to relax.
Often, control of the mind is as much a part of relieving chronic pain as is physical or pharmaceutical measures. This is not to say that pain is “all in your head.” Nothing could be farther from the truth. Using sophisticated pain management techniques though, allows the person to focus on something other than the pain itself, in much the same way as natural childbirth methods will allow the delivery to take place without resorting to heavy anesthetic use. The focus is on breathing and relaxation techniques so that the mind is in control of the pain impulses.
Surgery will relieve some of the cases of chronic pain, particularly where the cause is conditions such as compressed disc, bone spurs, or pinched nerves. However, sometimes the sufferer is told that surgery cannot help.
A relative recent remedy for chronic pain is the use of spinal cord stimulation (SCS). This technique implants a small electrical device that replaces the sensation of pain with a tingling or massaging sensation. It makes to claims to cure the pain, or the condition that has caused the pain, but in many people it gives power over pain, allowing them to live a normal life. This device doesn’t work in all types of pain or even in the same type of pain for all people, but it it proven to help in many cases.
