How to Relieve an Earache

Battling an earache? Learn how to cure it with one of these at-home remedies.

Have you ever had an earache that just wouldn’t go away? Steady throbs. Dull pain. It made you want to do almost anything to get rid of it. However, earache remedies aren’t plentiful, especially since it’s in a delicate area of the body.

We all know not to stick any sharp objects inside our inner ear. It could destroy our ear drum and lead to more severe issues. However, it’s the change in pressure or inflammation near or around this area that causes us ear-pain. So what do you do?

In order to relieve an earache, you can try a few home remedies that change pressure and dis-infect the ear. These cures are easy to do and will cost you less than ten dollars. Also, it’s important to remember that if an earache lasts more than a day and is accompanied with a fever, hearing loss or discharge, you need to contact your doctor immediately.

Star Olive Oil. Soothe an earache with two tablespoons of warm olive oil. Micro-wave the oil for 20 seconds. Add a few drops in your ear.

Smirnoff Vodka. If you don’t have rubbing oil, you can use Smirnoff Vodka. Just fill an eardropper with vodka and squeeze it into the affected ear. Let it drain out. This product will kill the bacteria in your ear.

Bounty and Dixie Cups. Change the pressure in your ear with this trick. It’s a great one to use while flying on an airplane, especially if gum doesn’t work. Dampen a sheet of Bounty Paper Towel with hot water, ball it up and place it into the bottom of the Dixie Cup. The steam from the hot water will soften the wax in your ear, alleviating the pain.

ConAir Pro Style 1600 Hairdryer. With your blow dryer on warm and low setting, hold the blow dryer nozzle over your ear and let the warm air ease your pain. (Warning: Keep the nozzle a foot away from your ear as you do this tip.)

Johnson Baby Oil. To ease an earache, fill a pot with hot water from the tap. Afterwards, add in a bottle of baby

oil. Let it heat up until it gets luke-warm. Then, place a few drops in your ear with an ear dropper. (Warning: If you have a perforated eardrum, do not use this remedy.)

Ziploc Storage Bags. Fill a Ziploc Storage Bag with warm water, seal it back up and hold it against your ear like a compress. The heat will ease your pain.

Kodak 35MM Film Canisters. Store earplugs while you swim or sleep in a Kodak film canister.

Glad Flexible Straws. Did you lose your eardropper? Insert a Glad Flexible Straw into the liquid, cover the open end of the straw with your finger, hold the straw over your ear and let the drops fall.

  1. A nurse just told me that alcohol alone is too strong for the ear. A mix of half alcohol half vinegar is better to drop inside ear.

  2. That alcohol/vinegar mixture is simply to clean the ear. Then, you would put baby oil on a cotton ball and put in ear. Body heat will allow for healing moisture.

  3. What about ear candleling? Seems to help me.
