Overeating: As Evil As Starving
Beside having an unsightly bodies, an overweight person has many other more serious problems. Firstly he has to lugged the excess weight around everywhere he goes. So it is common sight to see a fat person huffing and puffing his way up to a restaurant where he gorges yet another meal.

Recently the world was shocked to learn that millions of people were starving to death in some parts of Africa. It was a tragedy indeed. In response many people contribute what they could to alleviate the situation. Donations of food and money came from all parts of the world. A group of popular singers got together and raised a big sum of money to help these unfortunate victims.
Many of Us Overeat

Yet today there are still people dying of starvation in some areas of the world. It is an evil, there is no doubt about that, but there is not much an ordinary person can do about it except hope that the countries involved do something positive to stop it. A lot of the “powers that be” are too involved in their power struggle and bickering to care about what happens to their starving citizens.
Our country is a fortunate one. We are blessed with abundant rain and freedom from most natural disasters. Politically and economically we are comparatively well-off. Our citizens do not starve.
Except for a few who purposely starve themselves so that they can maintain a trim rigor, most of us have more than enough to eat. In fact many of us overeat.
The Supermarkets

Just take a look at a group of people anywhere. We are bound to notice a lot of overweight ones. With bellies leading the way they strut around the “night markets”, the supermarkets and any place where people gather. Their shirts and trousers are too tight and the excess fat bob up and down as they walk about.
Attracts Potentially Dangerous Things

Beside having an unsightly bodies, an overweight person has many other more serious problems. Firstly he has to lugged the excess weight around everywhere he goes. So it is common sight to see a fat person huffing and puffing his way up to a restaurant where he gorges yet another meal. If what we see on the outside is bad, the inside story of an overweight person is worse. While he huffs and puffs his way around, his poor heart has to work extra hard to cope with the strain put in it. Furthermore clogged coronary arteries do not help the situation. So it is common to find that an overweight person also has high blood pressure and a latent heart problem, if he has not have one already. Coupled with this high blood pressure is the ominous threat of diabetes. Then other complications like kidney problems can emerge. So an overweight person attracts all these potentially dangerous things onto himself. Still many of them continue to overeat.
Discussion with Psychologist and Doctor

Just why some people overeat is subject to discussion by psychologists and doctors. The fact remains that they do. Knowingly or unknowingly they abuse their bodies by allowing them to grow beyond safe proportions. This is indeed an evil, performed onto themselves.
Diet and Suitable Exercises

There are some who realize their folly and set about the task of reducing their weight to normal levels. Overeating is out of the question. With a careful diet and suitable exercises, an overweight person can reduce and attain normalcy. There are cases of people who are overweight because of glandular problems. For these people, medical help is needed. However for the majority of fat people, diet and exercise certainly do help. It is so much better and livelier to be able to move about without feeling the strain of having excess weight.
Normal Healthy Human Beings

Dieting must not be carried out to extremes though. I know of one case where a slim girl goes on a diet of mainly sweet potatoes. She grows thinner and thinner yet she still thinks she is fat. She looks as though she is already a case of ‘anorexia nervosa”. I only hope that she does not end up like Karen Carpenter.
So there we have it; two extremes of eating – overeating and starving. Both are not good. To live as normal healthy human beings we need to eat in moderate quantities. We do not overeat. We do not have to starve either.

I know the problems associated with overeating and am suffering quite a few of them myself, but I have been cutting down considerably lately and there is definitely less of me now. I feel guilty sometimes when I think of those people who have so little food. A thought provoking and well written piece.

A great article Mr Ghaz I to am guilty of the evil of overeating and walk a mile a day to help but I don’t think I’m overweight. I to have developed most of the problems you listed here. These certainly are two extremes. My heart goes out to those that are starving, to me that’s the bigger evil and should not be taking place in a world of plenty.

My husband’s doctor recently put him on a diet because he’s way overweight. He’s got health problems because of his weight, but hopefully they will clear up once he loses the excess weight.

Great Article, no worries of me over eating at this point. I do not have time to eat most days until the end of the day. Point in fact the food in this article has my tummy growling.
On a more serious note: many individuals suffer obesity and not all are over eating, so much as what they are eating.

I have never had a problem with my weight. My brother, son and sister have. People are so cruel to people who are overweight. How can anyone hurt a child or adult’s feelings because they are overweight. People talk about discrimination. I think overweight people are discriminated against. My heart breaks for them.

Very well written article, what you say is very true. I’ve exercised regularly for twenty years so I have no weight issues fortunately but I know it can be hard to lose weight once it is on. We also need to realise how lucky we are in the western world with the choice and abundance of food.

Europeans have the right idea. Food is to be savoured and enjoyed. Western diets are not food oriented; they are junk oriented. Fresh vegetables and fresh fruit are usually token gestures.
Also, our farming industry has been supplanted by corporations that focus on fast and easy produce and livestock.
I think the solution is to buy fresh produce, free run chickens, and grain fed, hormone-free port and beef.
And…get some exercise.

Good job: important topic to discuss. When I was studying Buddhism I learned of a trick to keep from over eating. First, don’t overload the fork/spoon, after placing the food in your mouth, set the utensil DOWN. Chew throughly and after swallowing, pause before picking up the utensil again. Sounds simple right? Now try it! Next time your at a restaurant, watch how people eat. Enough with my $0.02.
Thanks for letting me rant on your comments page!

it is so easy in america especially to overeat with so much fast food, microwave food and just open box and heat it i think one of the solutions is to make food from scratch again and actually enjoy sitting down at a table thanks for the article good job:))

Well written article!
I think that here in the United States we have a tendency to go for the “quick” foods such as cheeseburgers and such because our time can get so limited during the week with work and all!
It is certainly easier…though not healthier…to stop at a fast food place and pick up ’supper’ rather than face the fact that, once home, you’ll be spending even more time standing in front of a stove cooking rather than finally sitting with your feet up!
Now I’m not saying that this is the right thing to do but I do know that at the end of a workday I’m frequently too pooped to pop!

For many people, being overweight is associated with being uncomfortable in their own skin. To assist with weight control, every time the urge to snack is felt, first drink a large glass of clear water. This simple act will help you to eat less. Water will soon become one of your best friends. The major reason so many people in America are overweight is because we eat too much for comfort! It does not hurt to treat ourselves with something special once in a while, what is necessary is that we limit our portions and do not overeat! It is also necessary to keep our body properly hydrated, so drink a full glass of water with each meal or snack. Being overweight ******, but after reading a book, I lost 85 pounds! Words can not express how good I feel! This is a comment which I recently received about the book Lose Weight Using Four Easy Steps
