Pop, is It a Healthy Choice?

Health, effect of drinking soda pop. The calories, the acid, the caffeine… learn more..

Popcorn and soda, barbeque with soda, movie night with soda, soda at work, at school and at home, sounds good doesn’t it? Actually it’s enough to make you sick and I mean that literally. Soda pop it’s cold, fizzy and refreshing and completely bad for you. I’ve had my share of pops and soda’s and in fact my husband is addicted, but the horrible truth is, soda is partially to blame for some of the health downfall of today’s society.

Compared to fifty years ago Americans especially are now consuming up to four times the amount of soda and consuming less health drinks like milk and water. Did you know that one; yes one can of pop contains at least 100-250 calories? Holy cow right, a can a pop also has 10 teaspoons of sugar, that’s 100% of daily recommended serving per adult. So basically if you drink one can of pop forget having anything else with sugar in it all day….So if your wondering why you can’t lose weight or why your gaining it it’s probably all that soda your drinking. That is also one reason why we should not give pop to children, obesity in children is on the rise and in fact is becoming a real epidemic. So forget giving the kids pop, it’s full of sugar and calories.

Obviously the amounts of sugar in soda can’t be good for our teeth right. In fact soda can also cause sensitive teeth and tooth decay. The acid levels in soda can wear away at the enamel on your teeth, over time your teeth are no longer protected and your teeth begin to decay. Let me tell you this is true, my own husband teeth are ruined from drinking soda, we’ve spent thousands repairing and replacing his teeth due to acid corrosion and decay. So believe me when I say pop can ruin your teeth.

I know soda pop can seem to be a cool refreshing drink, and you believe on a hot day a cold glass of pop will dehydrate you, but it won’t. Drinking pop with caffeine and sugar causes your body to become even more dehydrated, it makes you more thirsty. Caffeine is a diuretic and can cause increased urination, you body is unable to retain the liquid, that is why you should always hydrate with water, not POP.

Some studies have shown that people whom drink caffeine regularly, whether in pop, coffee or others drinks; your body may become addicted. Your body comes to rely on the caffeine intake, and eventually symptoms may arise when you go into with drawl. Some people have been known to get headaches, and pain, sweatiness, shakiness and sometimes dizziness. If you drink diet soda you’re still getting caffeine and even worse you in taking sweeteners. Some studies show that artificial sweeteners can make you crave even more sweets, and in turn can cause future health problems.

So, Is pop really so bad? I think you know the answer…..

Listen I still drink pop, but I watch how much, I brush my teeth after and I watch my sugar intake. I “m not saying we shouldn”t indulge once in a while, but lets be sensible about what we put in our bodies and about what we give our children. Be smart, stay healthy and make good choices. And….for goodness sakes drink some water..lol…

  1. I agree with your statements 100%. Too bad the bad stuff tastes so good. I limit myself to 2 a month. Maybe not so bad in moderation, I am thinking?? A really well put together article.

  2. Very good advice. Coke is my vice. It is prob the one thing I really just do….even though I know it’s not good for me.

  3. If I had to continue the rest of my days without a Boylan Grape Soda – I might consider the unconsiderable. The fizz and bubbles outway the sugar and calorie content for me. A soda is a total treat for me – and when I’ve done well, I do treat myself. Viva la Soda!

  4. Good piece you have here.
    Keep on writing!
