Root Canal Treatment

This is a description of procedure used to save a tooth which is severely affected by dental caries.

It is a modern dental procedure to save a tooth in which the pulp (the living tissue within a tooth) has died or become untreatably diseased, usually as a result of extensive dental caries.

Dental caries(tooth decay) is caused due to gradual erosion of the enamel which is the outermost protective covering of the tooth and the dentine ( the substance below the enamel) . The main cause of this  is due to formation of plaques.( It is a colourless film of food particles which has to be removed regularly).

Steps involved in this treatment:

  1. A hole is drilled in the infected area of the tooth particularly the pointed area of the tooth known as the crown. Then all the materials are removed from the pulp chamber. This procedure is done and monitored under the guidance of soft X-rays.
  2. The cavity is then washed out properly .
  3. An antibiotic paste  and a temporary filling are packed in to the cavity and it is sealed.
  4. The above procedure is done to check the Sterility. ( To make sure that no micro organisms lives there).
  5. After a week or two it is again checked.
  6. When no infection can be detected, the cavity is filled with a sealing paste or a tapering solid point made of

Gutta-percha resin ( It is a mixture of several constituents mainly obtained from resins of plants) and this resin is mixed with Zinc and bismuth oxide to give a perfect look of tooth.

  • Then the mouth of the cavity is sealed with cement or any other strong adhesive.

These are the steps involved in dental procedure to save a tooth which are infected by dental caries.
