Surgeon General and Healthy Homes

Surgeon General releases healthy homes initiative.

Acting Surgeon General Steven K. Galson believes that many injuries and illnesses can be prevented if a home is kept free of hazards. He has sent out a Call to Action to Promote Healthy Homes.

At the same time, Ron Sims, the deputy secretary over the Department of housing and Urban Development, has issued Healthy Home Strategic Plan. It asks home owners to improve the health of their homes by following the following steps laid out by the Surgeon General:

  • Check gas appliances, fireplaces, furnaces and chimneys every year as well as replace filters regularly.
  • Develop a fire escape plan as well as a plan for extreme weather conditions
  • Protect children from poisoning. Store cleaning products and toxic chemicals out of reach as well as locking medicine cabinets.
  • Install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms. Change the batteries yearly.
  • Install safety gates in homes with young children.
  • Install grab bars in showers.
  • Learn to maintain and protect private water wells to improve water quality.
  • To improve home air quality, install radon detectors, control allergens and eliminate smoking.
