Ten Leading Medical Effects of Noise
Is your spouse too noisy for your liking? Is scolding each other the only way you can resolve differences in your union? Think twice before you continue digging each others grave. This article looks at ten major medical effects of sound pollution otherwise known as noise.
Most people associate noise with deafness alone. Unknown to men, women and children everywhere in the world, noise has other debilitating effects that can be life threatening. Guard yourself against incessant noise before any of the following happens to you.
- Hearing loss – Elevated sound pollution leads to loss of hearing especially after prolonged exposure. Hearing loss results from partial or total destruction of cilia located in the middle ear. Deafness resulting from noise is irreversible.
- Noise can cause blindness – Unknown to a lot of people, noise is associated with increased risk of blindness due to blood vessel constriction associated with elevated noise levels.
- Noise causes high blood pressure – Noise is associated with vasoconstriction (narrowing of the blood vessels) that elevates blood pressure leading to hypertension.
- Noise is associated with heart disease – Noise elevates the production of the hormone cortisol which increases the chances of suffering from myocardial infarction or heart attack.
- Noise causes peptic ulcers – Elevated noise is also associated with increased production of hydrochloric acid and the enzyme pepsin by the stomach walls. Stress attributed to noise also causes a reduction in the production of mucus by the membrane that lines the gastrointestinal tract.
- Constipation – Bowel movements are highly affected by the hormone Adrenalin which is elevated due to stress. Adrenalin stimulates the sympathetic nervous system which in turn inhibits bowel movement.
- Premature ejaculation and reduced libido – I know this one will scare men. The annoyance and elevated stress levels related to noise have been increasingly associated with premature ejaculation and a marked decrease in sexual libido.
- Insomnia – This may be an obvious effect of noise since no normal human being can sleep under noisy circumstances. Elevated Adrenalin and cortisol, produced as a measure to counter noise excite the senses leading to sleeplessness.
- Congenital birth defects – Some studies contacted independently by scientists have linked noise to congenital birth defects. It is believed that the hormonal imbalance associated with elevated noise levels may pose a danger to unborn children.
- Death – What could come out of a combination of all the nine dangers associated with noise if not death? The frustration of being deaf and blind as well as suffering from high blood pressure and or heart disease may as well be the last nail in the….

Very true information. I hate noise and am double sensitive to it. It was new to know about bowel movement, though it is not easy to excrete when someone’s shouting outside your rest room.

I can’t stand noise from garbage trucks passing by early in the morning to people talking loud when I am trying to sleep. Another annoying thing is when my radio happens to raise the volume on its own and I have to get up and lower it. I wouldn’t want a noisy spouse either. I love peace and quiet

A very good entry here. Agree with you, too much noise cause much harm. I cannot stand noise, will lose a lot of concentration and will get frustrated. I was shocked to see that noise can cause those problems which you have written.
I shall wear ear plugs or ear muff from today onwards…

Thank heavens I passed my recent hearing test with flying colours! Your article doesn’t give much hope for the younger generation, does it. I could happily live with less noise in my life, but noise does seem to be one of today’s realities. Good article.
