The Amazing Process of Child Birth

We become mothers and fathers so easily, but very little do we give time to analyze the amazing process of child birth which comes with mind-boggling adjustments to the physical and biochemical events this process entails.

The nine-month is finally over and the baby so longed for is about to be born. The expectant mother’s cervix has remained firmly shut, keeping the fetus safely in the womb. By the 9th month, her cervix will have thinned, softened and relaxed-this is when the real miracle of birth really begins in earnest.Of the several factors that bring about child birth, two are especially amazing;

The Miracle of Oxytocin Release

First, oxytocin, a hormone produced in the brain is released. Both men and women produce this substance, but a greater quantity of it is released in the pregnant mother when labor pangs begin, causing the cervix to dilate and uterus to contract. Just when the pituitary gland of the expectant mother knows when to release these hormones has remained the greatest mystery of the child birth science. The brain senses when exactly the gestation is complete and determines that it is the time for the powerful uterine muscles to take on their brief but heroic role of expelling the baby through the birth canal.

 The Placenta and Miracle of Adjustment

The second factor involved in this miracle of child birth is the role of the placenta, which stops producing the progesterone. During pregnancy, progesterone helps to prevent strong contractions, but now without the restrictions that progesterone brings about, the uterus begins to contract. After between 8-13 hours of labor, the child is pushed out through the relaxed and dilated cervix. After that, the placenta which encapsulated the baby for 9 months is also expelled out.   As the baby passes through the birth canal, an act of miraculous transition from the womb to the outside environment that demands that life is sustained with the help of oxygen occurs so effortlessly. While in the uterus, the lungs of the fetus were full of amniotic fluid, but as they squeeze through the birth canal, these fluids are also squeezed out of their lungs to prepare them for a new respiratory environment. The Lungs get filled with air to initiate breathing and the onset of this is usually the first cry.

Changes in the Circulatory System

 Drastic changes also occur in the heart and the rest of the circulatory system. A hole connecting the two atria of the heart and the blood vessel bypassing the pulmonary circulation close in order to re-route the blood through the lungs, thus enabling the blood to absorb oxygen. It is astonishing that this adaptation to the outside world happens within the twinkle of the eye!
