The Most Dangerous Foods and How They Can Kill You
Yes, even every day food can sometimes turn deadly. Here’s what you need to know.
You may not think of food as being inherently dangerous, although too much of the wrong foods can cause some pretty unsightly padding of the hips. The reality is foods can be lethal both in the short term and gradually over time due to the ingredients they contain. Here are some of the most dangerous foods you may encounter on a daily basis:
Choking Risk
You’ve probably heard of the cafĂ© coronary where a restaurant patron chokes on a piece of steak and dies on the spot. It might surprise you to learn that choking to death on food is the sixth leading cause of accidental death in this country and eating steak is the biggest risk factor for this form of demise. This unfortunate event is particularly likely to occur when a person drinks too much alcohol, diminishing the normal gagging reflex. Other foods that are high on the list of choking risk include such innocent foods as peanuts, popcorn kernels, chicken bones, lobster tails, and clams. What should you do is this situation happens to you? Try to dislodge the errant piece of food by throwing your upper abdomen against a firm surface such as a chair.
Food Poisoning Risk
That delicious chicken salad you had at the company picnic may have a sinister side to it. Chicken salad, tuna salad, and egg salad are all notorious for causing food poisoning particularly in warm, non-refrigerated conditions such as picnics. Raw eggs in and of themselves can be a vector for food poisoning. Grandma’s egg nog served at the Christmas party can also result in a very unpleasant case of intestinal distress and in extreme cases even death. Ground beef, shell fish, and poultry are other common sources of food borne illness.
Most Likely To Kill You Slowly
All of those delicious convenience foods found at fast food restaurants and many of the prepared foods you find on grocery store shelves may not take you out all at once but certainly increase your risk of leaving this earth early. Why? Because of they contain hydrogenated oils, the oils you’ve heard so much about. As it turns out, these oils have a marked effect on your risk of dying prematurely of a heart attack and may even increase your risk of cancer. Fortunately, the food industry has caught on and is slowly removing these oils from prepared foods.
Most Likely To Cause You To Break a Tooth
A broken tooth may not kill you but it can certainly cause some pain and inconvenience. If an unplanned trip to your dentist isn’t in your plans, you may want to limit foods that are most likely to break a tooth. These include popcorn kernels which when combined with the choking risk are downright dangerous. Nuts, and foods with pits such as cherries are also high risk foods. The other culprit is chomping down on ice from the freezer. If you have a fear of dental work, you might want to leave these foods off your plate.
As you can see, you need to make your food selections carefully if you value your health and your life.
