The Most Unusual But Effective Ways to Cure Hiccups

Hiccups are most annoying especially when it happens to you in public places. Can you imagine yourself “hiccuping” away on your first date? It’s better to know some of the cures and not let it be the most embarrassing moment of your life.

No one knows exactly how hiccups are caused. Eating, drinking, laughing, talking, swallowing air and anxiety are all the possible causes. Hiccups are extremely annoying even though they have provided merriment for everyone else. It’s better to know some of the cures and not let it be the most embarrassing moment of your life.

The cures are simple. You don’t have to move much of your body or flex your muscles. Follow these simple methods and you can get rid of it almost instantaneously (if it works for you).

Here is a list of cures that someone, somewhere swears by:

  1. By eating a tablespoon of peanut butter. This may seem unbelievable but you’ll never know unless you try it.

  2. By pinching your nose while you drink water.

This should be one of the most common ways…

  3. By pinching the back of your shoulder until it hurts (this works because the nerves that control your diaphragm come from the same place).
  4. By exhaling as hard as you can and then holding your breath. This works for me though I hate the feeling. But who cares as long as it can heal my hiccups. However, please do not hold your breath for too long unless you want to get to the news headlines as one of the most bizarre tragedies. Ha, just kidding…I know you’ll be extremely careful.
  5. By coughing or sneezing.
  6. By swallowing a teaspoon of sugar.
  7. By holding the tongue with your thumb and index finger and gently pulling it forward.
  8. By getting someone to drop an ice-cube down your back.
  9. By laughing. Don’t do this in public as you may scare everyone and laugh your way to the mental institute instead. Wahahaha…
  10. By deliberately trying to hiccup as much as you can.
  11. By breathing into a paper bag. Please refrain from doing this for too long as you may suffocate yourself.
  12. By chewing gum. I won’t have a chance to try this as chewing gum is banned in Singapore. Let me know if it works…
  13. By immersing your face in ice water. Please know your limits.
  14. By drinking water from the far side of a glass so that you’re drinking upside down. This works for me too.

This requires you to stretch your neck quite a bit…

  15. By gargling.
  16. By drinking a glass of water while someone presses your ears closed with his hands.

These are the 16 most unusual but effective ways to cure hiccups. Their effectiveness may vary from person-to-person. I am sure at least one method will work for you.

  10. Are you serious that the government can ban chewing gum? You should write an article about this–it’s interesting. I have trouble banning gum in my classroom from sneaky students; how does a whole government enforce it?
