Vitamin Water: the Hottest New Health Trend

Is it really beneficial to your health?

Water is essential to our health and well being. Most people already know that they need to drink 8-10 glasses a day. But, with all the newest vitamin water drinks on the market, the debate is being researched. Are these new beverages better, worse, or just another alternative choice to drinking the best thing – water?

Vitamin water is a hot trend on the market. The name alone makes health conscious minded people perk up and take notice. But what is it exactly? When you take a look at the label, you will find that most of these drinks are made up of distilled water, natural fruit flavors, electrolytes, fructose sweeteners, the Vitamin B’s, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E depending on the brand.

Many of these drinks also have very low calorie counts. Aquafina’s Alive Wellness Water proudly displays only 10 calories per serving. One bottle contains 2 servings and, thus, consumers are drinking a mere 20 calories they can easily burn off walking to and from their cars everyday. However, be aware that many of the drinks can contain up to 125 calories and anywhere from 25-30 grams of sugar. Check the label carefully.

Because of the growing interest in vitamin water there have been many studies to analyze its effectiveness. Some findings show that the body will absorb the vitamins found in this new water beverage more rapidly than through food products! A find of great importance, however, with the extra calories, it is important to note that if you do not maintain an active lifestyle adding this drink to your diet may cause weight gain. Furthermore, through studies it is recommended that this drink be used in addition to vitamin supplements as it may not contain sufficient vitamin levels for a healthy diet.

It seems to me that vitamin water is perfect for people who are on the go and may have forgotten to take their daily vitamin supplements. Or for those who want to feel a quick pick me up from the liquid form of vitamins that their supplements may not give them right away. It is also great for those who want a flavored drink, but do not want to feel guilty about consuming empty calories. After all, if you’re craving something sweet, it’s better to consume something that will be beneficial to your health.

And, lastly, keep in mind that when you’re craving something sweet, studies have also shown that it often means the body is oftentimes simply thirsty. On average, most people do not drink nearly enough water a day. This accounts for the high levels of sluggishness and lack of energy felt by a wide majority of the population throughout some part of the average day.

  1. I really enjoyed reading this. Four years ago if you had told me that my cravings were really the need for water, I would have laughed. I now realize the importance of drinking enough water even though I am not thirsty. I was amazed at the difference in my health.

We can count on you, Laine to bring information that is both important and useful to our attention. Another good article!

  2. Thank you with all my heart, Darlene. I do my very best to educate myself as much as I can about healthy, natural alternatives. Your health is number one and precious. It affects everything in your life. Knowing this knowledge can help others and myself is one of the greatest feelings I can ever fully begin to explain.

My sincere gratitude to all who read and continue to read my work.

    Best wishes.

  3. Can you help clarify something for me? Lately i’ve been choosing vitamin water at times when i would otherwise have regular soda, fruit juice, or other flavored drinks (like Snapple, etc), on the theory that if i’m not in the mood for plain water, at least vitamin water has less sugar than those other choices, plus some bonus vitamins.

Am I on the right track here?

  4. Dear Leticia,

My apologies for not getting back to you sooner – I was out of the country without computer access until last night.

Yes, you are on track. For the most part, many of the vitamin waters have less sugar than other flavored drinks (but be careful, read the label because some have just as much or more calories than other types and be sure to also read the serving size. Some bottles say that there are two servings per bottle. So if the bottle says 100 calories, if you drink the whole thing you are actually drinking 200 calories!)

In addition, fruit juices often are the highest in calories and it is often suggested to cut down on them because companies often use a substantial amount of sugar to flavor them. I choose Aquafina because out of all the vitamin waters I have found it has the least amount of calories, only 20 per bottle. You can have up to 5 of them and it would be like drinking one can of regular soda! You get that flavor AND vitamin fix and you are filled up and do not feel guilty! It’s a win-win situation!

Thank you with all my heart for your comment & your very GOOD question!

    Best wishes!

    Sincerely,

    -Liane Schmidt.

  7. Hey Liane,

thanks for writing up on this article!

I’ve been a huge Pepsi fan for years now (I’m 21). On average, I would drink 2L a day. Lately, I’ve been getting huge stomach aches, among other things. I started drinking Aquafina’s Plus+ Vitamin Enhanced Water and I have zero cravings for any pop/soda now.

Drinking all the Pepsi I had put me on the heavy side, also due to not being very active — but would you say I’m on a good track with drinking on average 2 of these a day? On the bottle, it states 100 calories and 25 grams of sugar where the recommended intake is 591 mL (1 bottle) once or twice a day.

I think it’s pretty obvious that this product is better than Pepsi or any soda/pop for that matter, but would you say it’s safe to drink often instead of just “plain” water?

  8. Dear Graham,

Thank you so kindly for your comment. Because there are so many different types of vitamin water on the market, I am a big fan of the brands that have little to no calories at all. While the vitamin water you are referring to is filled with vitamins, the calorie content is still very high at 100 calories. If you are looking to watch your weight as well, be sure to try not to drink too many of those. There are other brands that only have 0-20 calories per entire bottle. But, you are definitely on the right track!

    Blessings.

    Sincerely,

    -Liane Schmidt.

  9. Personally, I prefer pure water and fruits over any vit water or food supplements. I like herbal food supplements though. =)
