What Age is Your Peak?

I have researched the subject of human physical and mental peaks. I give my conclusions through varied examples.

                                                  What age was your peak?

According to my research the human body and mind have a peak for fitness and intelligence when was yours or are you still working up to speed?  it’s a difficult question depending on what measurement you are using.  For instance as professional football player would typically peak his or her achievements at 23 to 30 years old.  After 30 the average football player will begin to lose their pace on the ball and their speed across the pitch will slow.

Intelligence and experience are there but the body for the football player is dwindling after 30.  A professional boxer typically is at his peak at 26 to 30 years old depending on the boxers class I.e. Middle-weight or Heavy weight.  Boxing is so physically punishing that the decline of success is drastic in the extreme.  A boxer who is still practising his art will get seriously hurt if he continues to box after 35 years old.  The boxer’s reflexes will not be quick enough to avoid many of the knock out punches and brain damage is prevalent.

An Astronaut is typically 35 to 45 years old.  The thinking is at that age the body is still fit enough to endure the immense stress of the “G” forces involved in space flight.  Importantly the 35 year old Astronaut will have years of experience in problem solving and the dexterity to pilot a billion dollar space craft.

Conversely a Bomber aircraft pilot in WWII was 21! Years old on average.  The thinking behind having Bomber pilots so young was the fear factor?  It was thought by many that a man of 20 will not be married and have children, having the wonderful experience of father-hood would make the bomber pilot cherish his own life so he can look after his children and wife.  Being blown to pieces by cannon shells is not conducive to safety.

A Prime Minister or President is seen to be fit to control a nation only once he or she is in their 40s or 50s and in some countries we have leaders in their 70s.  I am a qualified Motor Mechanic, a peak in age for a mechanic is around 25 because the job is so physically demanding that working on cars and lifting the heavy weights involved in engine replacements of gearbox replacements is enormous. My spine is crumbling due to worn out discs because I continued working on cars into my 30s.

Sexually a man is said to be at his most sexually active and fertile at 18 years old.  A woman’s fertility peaks in late teenage years also but the woman’s sexuality and desires are peaking at around 35 years old.  The only conclusion I can draw from my rough guide to human peaks and troughs is to get to know your body, work with your body? Cultivate your mind too and learn when your brain is most productive and creative?

Try to learn from people older than yourself there is no substitute for experience.  When I was 18 years old an older Motor Mechanics pulled me to one side one hot afternoon and said to me that once you reach 25 years old you do not want to be working on cars!  He showed me his posture he was not capable of standing up straight and erect because of terrible Arthritis in his spine.  If only I had listened to his painful advice!

  1. Good Post

  2. An interesting one LB. I have often said it is in many ways such a shame that we do not have the wisdom of experience in our youth. However, I’m sure that would have many repercussions also. I hope your recovery is going well. :-)

  3. A well-researched and well presented post. You have given a minute details of every known areas where age took a major impact on its productivity. I still remember my old man’s regular advice for us ( me and my other brother) everytime he saw us sweating it out every basketball game.. Sons, Don;t take a bath or a shower after a game. I guess he is right, My younger brother, who disregarded my dad’s advise is now laboring with goat and arthritis, Luckily for me, I listened to what my dad said, and do this date, my body is that of a 30 year old man. .

  4. I’d hate to think I’ve hit my peak. In my mind I’m still getting there. Maybe it’s more like mind over matter :-)
    Thanks for sharing.

  5. So many variables are responsible for this. Good information anyway.

  6. Fascinating article. I wonder what will happen now that so many adults are participating in Masters or Veterans competitive sports? When I was young swimmers peaked in their teens, now they are achieving world records still close to age 30. Your article gives us lots to think about.

  7. Interesting article, the body and mind are two very different sides to the same coin. People are running Marathons at 60+, though not as fast as they would have done 30 years previous. A lot of how we feel,or what its possible to do seems to be dictated by our expectations ! If you expect to be over the hill at 40 then you will act like you are and lo and behold you will feel that way . The intellect is the other area with societal expectations of how you should behave and feel, but they are just that ! Some 35 year olds have 70 year old heads and vice versa .

  8. Very interesting! This was a great post Banks. Thanks for sharing.

    Take care,
    BluSphere, 18 years old.

  9. DB..When was my peak? How come I get all the hard questions? My answer is simple…I don’t remember…all I know that I’m unable to do some of the physical stuff that I used to do and I am now doing stuff that I rarely did before…afternoon naps, etc!!! Too bad life is wasted on the young!!! Some interesting commentary and food for thought…I voted that I like it…thanks…

  19. Great views,,,

  20. A very good and accurate article LB. I “shot myself in the foot” too many times and now I am paying the price just like you, but I am still encouraged to see fellow equestrians on the trail rides past the age of 70. Now, if I can just find a way up by myself. I will have to admit the last surgery in February knocked the props out from under me, so a mounting block is now necessary. Good luck to you during your recuperation and just keep the chin up in knowing you may have passed your peak for working on cars, but you are still on top in the world of friends and writing!

  21. Excellent post. I wonder everyday I work how much longer I can be a floor nurse. After working two 12 hour day shifts, it takes a day for my body to recover and I am in good shape.
