What is healthy urine supposed to look like?
Going to the bathroom to urinate is something we all do and something never think about much less talk about unless we think something is wrong. That is the time when we look down and wonder if what is “coming out” is normal. How do we know if it is normal? Simple, what does it look or smell like?
When we wake up in the morning after several hours of sleep our “first morning urine” will be a dark yellow and have a strong smell. This is because we haven’t gone to the bathroom for such a long time; quite normal. Throughout the day (providing we are drinking enough fluids) our urine should become much lighter in color and almost clear with no smell to it at all.
Signs that there may be a problem would be if your urine is very dark after your first morning urine, if you see blood in it, or if you see white specs in it. Most often if there is anything wrong with your urine you would have symptoms of a urinary tract infection (pain when urinating or having urinate frequently without getting much out) but sometimes there are no symptoms and keeping an eye on what your urine looks like may be the only symptom.
Keep in mind that you need to keep yourself hydrated. Drinking at least 64 ounces of water per day is a good idea . You should be able to go to the bathroom at least 6 times a day to urinate in order to keep yourself healthy. Also, some things you eat are capable of changing the color and smell of your urine (asparagus tends to do this).
If you are not sure whether or not your urine looks right you can always do some at home tests. There are companies that sell pH test strips you can use to check to see if your urine is acidic or alkaline. And there are ways to make your urine more alkaline or acidic depending on what the tests say. Again, drinking enough fluids will help and if you are not sure or feel that there is something wrong see your doctor! Be healthy!
