You Have Cancer? How Can I Help?

Everyone is searching for the perfect gift for someone who is affected by cancer.

I’m sure we have all fielded the same gut-wrenching call from a friend – the call we all dread that comes straight out of left field.

“Did you hear that so-and-so has cancer?” or “I just found out that I have cancer.”

An awkward few moments later, we put the telephone down and wonder what to do, how to help.

As we sit and think about the situation, we also wonder… What gift can I buy this person to tell them that I care and that they are in my thoughts?

Flowers are a little morbid, and they definitely don’t have a very good shelf life, so maybe it’s time to think outside the box and get creative.

I, for one, like to be the friend who comes up with the most creative and innovative gift – the one that makes the person I’m giving it to have a better day – and more importantly, have hope…

My latest finding was on a site called www.canincancer.com. What I found here was the inspiring story about a woman with breast cancer who went through the journey that is faced by so many people around us. She emerged from her disease with the perception that “Even though I have cancer, there are many things I can do… I can still be a normal person, I can still lead a normal life, and I can still be the person I have always been.”

Inspired by her story, I immediately ordered her book through her Website. Called “I put the Can in Cancer”, it is an illustrated, simple yet poignant reminder that even those who have cancer can still do many things that we all take for granted in our everyday lives.

“I can hug my dog,” “I can bake a cake,” and “I can take a nap,” are all examples of how the author, Imogen Gough, offers the gentle reminder that even with cancer, we can still accomplish everyday tasks in our lives.

The illustrations in the book are simple yet effective. With this book, Gough offers the gift of hope, and extends the belief that people with cancer are normal people just like you and I.

Www.canincancer.com is a must-visit site for anyone dealing with cancer – patients, parents with cancer who are looking for an effective way to describe their situation to young children, and in short, anyone who is affected with the disease in any way. It is suited to all ages and all types of cancer, and what’s more, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each book are donated to brighten chemo wards everywhere.

So next time you receive that dreaded call, remember – you can help yourself or a friend or loved one to put the can in cancer!!
