Health Care Reform

The new Health Care Plan isn’t clear yet but this is what will likely be coming up in the near future. You won’t have to worry that you will be dropped from your present plan because of yours or your family’s changing health. And there will be no life time ceilings imposed by the insurance companies. All Americans will have a qualified health plan designed by Uncle Sam.

The details are still unclear but within a few years nearly all Americans will be required to have coverage by a qualified health insurance designed to government specifications. It will likely cover emergencies, hospitalization, maternity care, well child services, rehabilitation, mental health care, substance abuse services, preventive care, and prescriptions. There would be no life time ceilings imposed by insurance companies. Coverage would be grouped in tiers with the lowest incomes being in the lowest tiers with the lowest premiums.

Nobody would be cut out because of changes in health, and no preexisting conditions would give cause for rejection. Everyone would be required to have coverage. Information on your tax returns would tell if you have no coverage, which would mean a fine. A federal subsidy would cap premiums for families of four who earn less $88,000. The cap would be 1% of income for lower incomes and about 12% for higher ones. Annual premiums might start at about $1,600 for a family of 4 at incomes of about $40,000 regardless of age and nearly $11,000 at the $88,000 income maximum for a policyholder age 50 or more. Higher income earners would be hit much harder. Location and family size would be a price setting factor.

Another annual cap on out of pocket costs, Perhaps $12,000 for families, would not take premiums into account. Medicaid might be expanded to more low income families.”I suspect the days of high deductibles might be numbered” says Henry Aaron, senior fellow and health policy expert at the Brookington Institution. Those younger than 25 might be able to buy a cheaper limited coverage, or they might be allowed to stay on Mom’s or Dad’s plan until age 26.

Some people would be allowed to keep employee coverage and those kept out because of existing conditions would be brought into the fold. Those with no coverage would have to buy a policy from a private insurer or from the government. Nothing has been set in stone and we will be hearing much more in the days to come.

  1. Hope this reform would really benefit those who needs it most. Great post! :)

  2. Under the present plan people would be clanned with a set budget for that clan. If that money runs out so would health care for those people. Fortunately, that plan will never reach the president.

  3. Informative article.

  4. An interesting article. I cant imagine having to pay for basic healthcare. We are so lucky here in the UK.

  5. I am sharing this post with the family cathegory at nairaland.com. Thanks for the share.

  6. Nice share

  7. I have been opposed by looking at other countries (France, G Britain, Canada etcetera) w/national/universal health care and the mess that has been made of it. Also, our gvt does not seem to do a good job at running things (an understatement … USPS for example). Please, I hope to be proven wrong ;)

    Nice Post!

  8. This is very interesting. I hope this plan works out.

  9. i dont know..the government running anything turns out really bad. The only thing the government does right is the military and that is the only thing the government is supposed to do..keep our country safe.. I don’t see how the health care bill fits into that.

  10. Im still kinda on the fence about this. but your explanation is the clearest one that I have read as yet. The official googlygoop is so up your rear that I need a doctor after trying to fathom what is said.

  11. I am so thankful that I live in England and do not have to worry about health care costs. We pay through our national insurance contributions, but it is free at the point of use and I have always had excellent care. I have followed the US health care debate with interest and this is the clearest breakdown I have seen anywhere.

  12. I am still uncertain with our health care reform. Great write Ruby!

  13. I`m wondering how well this would work. It sounds great and all but who would be paying for it?
