Hospital Honor Roll
4,861 hospitals were ranked by how they do with patients who need complex care, such as heart transplants, spinal tumors, dealing with inflammatory bowel disease, and other high stakes medicine that calls for more sophistication than most hospitals can offer. It’s still surprising that only 21 hospitals made the Honor Roll.
Only 21 hospitals made the honor roll out of 4,861 hospitals that were graded for best hospital rankings, surprisingly only about 3% ranked in even one of the 16 specialties. Only the 21 below, less than two fifths of one percent of the total made the Honor Roll. Hospitals received 2 points if their score was above the overall average by 3 or more statistical measures and 1 point if it was 2 or more above average.

We have hospital league tables in UK too, but I am not sure that they really mean that much.

I can see why there is a lot of outsourcing in the medical field.

An interestingly short list, perhaps because of the incrediblely large number of deaths due to hospital-related mistakes in the U.S. each year. A lawyer’s paradise.

An interestingly low number due in part perhaps to the incredible number of deaths related to hospital mistakes in the U.S. each year. A lawyer’s paradise.

As a nurse working in a local hospital I am surprised as many made the list as they did. If hospitals would focus more on patient care and safety they would all be on the list. Good post.

As an ex nurse, I am with Pam on this. Also, as hospitals transfer patients between them in the UK, I am not sure the lists are a true grading picture. It was interesting to see the US ones, thanks.

Very interesting stats, thanks for sharing Ruby. It can literally be a ‘postcode’ lottery in the UK, but there is more choice now.

This is a very good article. It’s disturbing that only 21 hospitals made the honor roll. The number should be much bigger.

Great research,
I’m from Baltimore, Maryland and John Hopkins is a great hospital with several hospital campus all over Maryland..They are also the largest employer in the state of Maryland….Being a research facility they are always on the cutting edge of new stuff. I was paid once $1500 for a 5day study on ecoli… the easiest money I ever made….All they wanted was to check your poop daily….hehehe.

Hospitals should maintain a good image always so that patients will be at ease that they’ll be well taken cared of.
