Home Remedies Used in the Old Days

Health tips from the past.

  1. Mix equal parts of honey and lemon juice and drink two teaspoons at regular interviews to help relieve a cough and sooth the throat.
  2. Dissolve ½ to 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda into ½ a glass of warm water and drink to remove heartburn.
  3. A daily recommended dosage of Primrose oil is believed to help with eczema problems.
  4. Drinking a cup of mint tea after a large meal settles the stomach.
  5. To eliminate the odor of garlic on the breath, chew some parsley.
  6. To soften heels and remove cracks, mix ½ a cup of aqua cream, 1 tablespoon camphor, 1tablespoon mentholated spirits and 1 tablespoon candle wax. Soak feet in hot water with salt and bicarbonate of soda for 15 to 20 min. Dry thoroughly and rub the mixture on your heels. To speed up the healing process, cover your feet with plastic for the night.
  7. Stubborn stains on false teeth can be removed by laying them in bleach and hot water for 30 min. Then brush and rinse well under hot water.
  8. If coughing prevents your sleep at night, try sleep sitting up by placing a couple of pillows behind your back and head.
  9. To help with the problem of blood pressure lift the head of your bed with bricks so that your bed is tilted downwards.
  10. A pregnant woman should massage their nipples with a nipple cream every day to prevent cracking when breastfeeding.
  11. To open a blocked nasal passage, crush mint leaves, mix them in boiling water in a sink and inhale the vapors.
  12. When starting a job that requires you to be in your feet all day, harden the feet by soaking them in mentholated spirits every night for about a fortnight.
  13. If you inhale poisons by accident but it is not serious just uncomfortable drink some milk.
  14. For red tired eyes, place cold tea bags over them and rest them for about 15 minutes.
  15. To remove a wax buildup in the ears warm sweet oil and pour a few drops into the ear. Allow the oil to soak into the ear for about 30 minutes. This should be done for 3 consecutive nights.
  16. To help get rid of a babies nappy rash. Beat the white of an egg until stiff then rub on the baby bottom and let the baby lie in the sun for a few minutes without his nappy on. This should be done a couple of times during the day.
  17. If a baby has a fever, sponge him/her down with cool water. This will help to bring the fever down.
  18. The use of Vaseline on eye lashes and eyebrows is believed to help the eye lashes to grow longer and darken them as well as darken the eye brows.
  19. For a good home made face mask, make a paste with a handful of mint leaves, half a tub of yogurt and a quarter of a cucumber. Apply to the face for 15 minutes. This mixture will sooth and purify the skin.
  20. Massage a sprained ankle with brake fluid. This will speed up the healing and lesson the pain.
