Home Treatment for Diarrhea
Diarrhea is the frequent and watery bowel movement that usually accompanied by painful cramps or nausea and vomiting. It is uncomfortable and unpleasant but a no big deal health issue. It is advisable though that everyone who are suffering from diarrhea to drink plenty of fluid to avoid complication to a simple situation.
The causes of diarrhea are often due to viral infection wherein the virus has invaded the bowel and causing it to absorb excessive fluids then leads to a watery stool. Diarrhea usually takes a couple of days but if it’s longer than one week then you maybe suffering from amoeba and giardia.
There are four “If’s” to remember before visiting the doctor when suffering from Diarrhea.
- If you see blood in your stool.
- If you feel that you are getting dehydrated.
- If you are having fever, chills and diarrhea persists for 48 to 72 hours.
- If the diarrhea occurs to a very young child or an elderly.
Here are home remedies that you can try:
1. Just let it out – if you’re not so young and very old and have no chronic illness, it maybe safe to just put up with it for a couple of days. For some people they say, it’s good for cleaning the stomach.
2. Drink plenty of water – it is best that you drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Although there is no proof that diarrhea cleanses the stomach. Doctors said that at least two quarts of water, three if you are having some fever. Some people would drink weak tea with a little sugar, Gatorade, non diet soda pop, and an apple juice. Pedialyte, or any over the counter electrolyte replacement formula also.
3. Cool drinks but not ice cold.
4. Chicken broth – or any other broth will also help. It should not be hot but lukewarm and just add some salt.
5. Rest – it is always best to get rest so your body will have a chance to fight the bacteria that’s causing the diarrhea.
6. Heating pad – put heating pad on your belly to relieve abdominal cramps.
7. Yogurt – they have live lactobacillus cultures which are the good bacteria that live in our stomach.
8. Eat light – do not eat meals that your stomach will have a hard time to process. Bland foods like rice, noodles, bananas, soda cracker, and gelatin will be good for your digestive system.
9. Take Diatabs or Imodium A-D – if you really need to be relieve, these over the counter medicines will help you get over diarrhea.
If diarrhea persist after 48 hours, see you doctor for proper treatment.
