How to Avoid a Headache

A headache can vary from a mild throbbing sensation to a painful tension headache that prevents you from engaging in your normal activities. Whatever degree of headache you have, it is difficult to function properly when you are not feeling your usual self. The following article will offer some suggestions on ways in which you can help yourself by avoiding a headache.

Get Enough Sleep

The body needs time to rest and recuperate at the end of each day. But if you are in a constant rush and then neglect your sleep in a bid to get ahead at work or in some other capacity, you are likely to develop a tension headache. Find ways to wind down and relax more once you get home from work and keep work in its proper place. Try to gradually go to bed slightly earlier and then build this up. A refreshing night’s rest will usually mean that you do not have a headache to nurse when you first get up.

Stay Hydrated

Headaches often occur when the body is dehydrated. Many people are not even aware that they are dehydrated. Some signs to look out for are unexplained tiredness, dizziness and incoherent speech. By the time you are aware you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated. The average adult should drink 2 liters of water each day. This amount should be increased when engaging in strenuous activity, such as exercise. Carry a water bottle around with you and refill it. Drinking plenty of water will help you to stay healthy as well as avoid a headache from occurring.

Stress Management

Do you ever come home from a hard day at work and then find that you have a headache? If so, stress could be the cause of your headache. Look at your average work day and try to work out what it is in particular that is causing you so much stress. Do you have strict deadlines to keep to? Are you filling in for someone else who is off from work as well as doing your own job? These can all be causes of stress at work. But if you have a headache to deal with as well, you can be unproductive at work.

Ask for help to deal with periods of high stress or for an extension for a deadline, if possible. Keep a clearly labelled bottle of painkillers with you when you go to work, such as aspirin or ibuprofen to take when you feel a headache developing. Be careful when taking aspirin though, as it thins the blood and can react badly with other drugs, such as warfarin.

Stay Calm!

If you are prone to fits of anger, your blood pressure will soar and you are also likely to exhibit physical symptoms such as a racing heart rate and even a headache. Try to find other ways to express your feelings. Speak in a calm, non confrontational manner and you will see a marked improvement in your physical wellbeing.

The above suggestions are only intended to help with mild forms of headaches. More severe headaches, such as migraines, need to be assessed by doctors, in order to find the cause and offer an effective treatment. If you have had a headache for a prolonged period of time and a simple painkiller has not been able to offer any relief, visit your doctor as soon as possible. This could be a symptom of a more serious health complaint.
