How to Deal with a Tension Headache Without Medication
Many people don’t want to reach for medication as soon as a tension headache starts. There are ways that you can deal with a tension headache without having to take medication.
If you start to feel pain and a lot of pressure in your head, shoulders and /or neck, you may be experiencing a tension headache. A tension headache also doesn’t involve throbbing pain. I have been getting tension headaches for years. For quite a long time I had no idea what to do about them and they seemed to last forever. The most simple solution was to take medication and that was it, but the medication never really helped. The only time I got relief was when I found other ways to deal with the tension headache, including finding the reason why I got it in the first place.
Make sure that you are eating enough throughout your day. There are quite a few people, myself included, who get tension headaches after they’ve skipped meals or aren’t eating on a regular schedule. I now make sure to make a strong effort to eat around the same times every day. Keep snacks on hand should a tension headache start to pop up.
If you’re not getting enough sleep, it may be one of the reasons that you’re getting tension headaches. Stick to a sleep schedule as much as possible. Try to go to bed and wake up around the same time day after day. If you start to get a tension headache, see if you can squeeze in a nap. Also, make sure that you are sleeping well- that you are comfortable and that the temperature is perfect for you in your room. Any outside disruptions will cause you to have a less than perfect sleep.
Stretch, do meditation and/or yoga. All are great stress relievers and can actually help lessen the frequency in which you get the tension headaches. They help to calm the body and mind which will definitely help you to feel more relaxed. These are simple relaxation techniques that you can do on a day to day basis.
Get enough exercise during the week. Although you may think there is not enough time in your day, there are simple exercises that you can do. Even if you do a ten minute exercise every day it will be helpful.
Keep track of the tension headaches that you have. Should you need to visit a doctor, he’s going to ask you questions about when you get the headaches, how frequently and what you were doing before you got them. If you have it all written down, it will be especially helpful.
Make sure that you see a doctor if the tension headaches become too frequent.
