Natural Remedies for Leg Cramps

Sudden cramping in the leg muscles.

The usual causes are nutritional deficiencies, circulatory problems, strain placed on the legs by excessive weight, and electrolyte imbalances.

Natural Remedies
A key immediate factor is inadequate or imbalanced blood circulation.
• When your leg goes into a cramp, get up and move about. Flex your feet, with your toes pointing upward.
• Apply a hot water bottle or heating pad to the cramping area and apply pressure with your hands.
• If in bed (when the cramping begins) and you know your legs are overheated, put the hurting leg out of the covers and the cramp may immediately stop.

Other Helps
• Begin eating a better diet, primarily consisting of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts. Do not overeat.
• It is important that you take calcium (2000 mg), magnesium (1000 mg), and potassium (5500 mg) and that you take them in balanced amounts. Without enough calcium, muscles tend to go into spasms.
• Do not stand in one place too long. Move about. Shift your weight from one foot to the other. Wiggle your toes. Keep the circulation moving.

• Take a long walk every day. Relax as you do it and breathe well.
• When sleeping or sitting, sometimes elevate your feet above your heart.
