Natural Sore Throat Soothing Remedy

A great little treatment to ease a sore throat.

You dread that feeling of a sore throat because it indicates the possible onset of a cold or a bout of the evil influenza. It often appears out of nowhere – a tickle in the back of the throat that suddenly turns into a sensation that feels like you have swallowed a couple of razor blades. It is painful, uncomfortable and irritating, and most likely; it is coming to a town near you!

It is the season of colds and chills for those of us living in more temperate climates and while we do our best to duck, dive and dodge the germs that fly our way as someone sneezes in the office or supermarket, the chances are that most of us will suffer a sore throat to one degree or another before the winter is over.

The drug companies are rubbing their hands with glee and no sooner have you said “astishoo!” they will be raking in the profits from the pills and potions bought by us to make ourselves feel better. But did you know that there are many natural sore throat treatments that will cost you little or next to nothing at all?

I am allergic to citrus, particularly lemon, so the conventional hot lemon is no good for me – in fact it makes me worse.

However, I will share with you a quite remarkable remedy that I stumbled upon in the years that I suffered from chronic tonsillitis – it is quick, simple and very effective.

Sage Gargling Tea

2-3 teaspoons of dried sage

Boiling hot water

Put the dried sage in a cup and fill the cup with boiling water.

Stir the “Sage tea” and allow the herb to infuse.

Use a tea strainer or small sieve and drain the tea into a separate cup.

As soon as the tea is at a temperature that you can manage, gargle the mixture and spit it away. Repeat the gargling process until you have finished all of the liquid.

Sage acts as a natural anaesthetic, so it will help numb your throat and give you some comfort. Unlike other remedies, it is not sweet drink that is swallowed and therefore it is suitable for diabetics.

Sage can be used to treat other oral complaints such as gingivitis where it can be gargled in the same way.

  3. I could have used this last week. I was deathly sick and yet, I still was writing.

  4. Most medications are in fact derived from some simple fruits/vegetables, so it would be a lot healthier if people stuck to the natural remedies that have worked for centuries. Your article makes a very good point!

  5. This is sage advice, and nicely written!
