Causes of Ear Ringing, Aching, and Clogging

Ear ringing can be caused by disease or infection, but is widely attributed to consuming too much caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine.

Aching in the ear (ear aches) can be caused by gum infections (improper brushing of the teeth, or lack of oral hygiene), water trapped in the ear (showering or swimming), and mid ear infections. There are other causes for ear problems which may be disease related.

The most common causes of ear problems can be treated by prevention and maintenance.

  1. Reduce coffee, alcohol, and soda pop consumption.
  2. Clean ears once in the morning with a Q-Tip dipped in rubbing alcohol.
  3. Clean ears after showers, and before bed for sever ear problems.
  4. Reduce smoking or quit.

Remember to visit a doctor or an ear and nose specialist for the best solution to your ear problems.

  1. Good advice. I try to “detox” during the summer–cut out all the caffeinated beverages and a lot of the sugar.
