Nowadays,immunization,once used only against smallpox ,is available against a large number of diseases ranging from measles to plague.

Anaesthesia has been made safer and there is a vast new range of painkillers and mild sedative drugs which calm the nerves and alleviates worry.Blood transfusions are a matter of course,and some hospitals carry bank blood grouped according to the main blood groups so that a patient can always be given blood of a group that will match his own .

Kidney machines are available for some patients whose own kidney have ceased to filter the impurities from their blood and who would die within a few days without the help of the machine.”Iron lungs” are used to make breathing possible for  people whose chest muscles have been paralysed by disease or accident.Through this the people who are affected have been able to survive all this disasters.

Many challenges remain,including the discovery of a safe and wholly affective remedy for cancer, in some ways scientists and doctors in the twentieth century may have had too much progress too rapidly,for it now appears that some of the new drugs are more powerful and more dangerous than their discoverers  realised.But it is true that never before have so many lives been saved,and never has life itself been so safe from disease and free as it can be today. if not for the doctors and scientists who have gone into medicine life would not worth living.
