In France, arthritis (also called rheumatism) are the leading cause of medical consultation for pain. However, rheumatic pains are often overlooked or ignored by patients and even doctors!
40% of French people suffering from rheumatism
A recent study called AAF, Arthritis Action for France, indicates that 40% of French people are affected by arthritis, rheumatic disease (back pain, osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis …). However, the study also shows that AAF 10% of these patients never talk about their joint pain to their physician. For them, the rheumatic pains are not really a sign of disease, and they will not get worse. They refuse to “bother” their doctor with what they see as “little pain”. The result? Several months pass before starting a real treatment … But the longer we wait, the more damage to the cartilage are important and irreversible …
Rheumatic pain in treated!
Even doctors often treat rheumatic pain adequately. ”If joint pain is not completely subsided and quickly, it turns into chronic pain (that is to say, continuous). We now know that it is preferable to treat the pain massively from its appearance. Unfortunately, many doctors still refuse to give adequate doses of analgesics during the first consultation for arthritis “says Dr. Patrick Sichère, rheumatologist and member of the scientific study of AAF. This study also reveals that a quarter of those who received treatment for their arthritis eventually stop it, disappointed by its lack of efficiency. However, many different treatments available at present and their effectiveness varies with the sick. If one does not effectively relieve rheumatic pain, another will prove more appropriate.
The classic anti-pain
Analgesics used in rheumatology for pain range from simple paracetamol with the powerful morphine. As for anti-inflammatory, they limit cartilage degradation and therefore rheumatic pain. Well managed, they prevent joint inflammation to become chronic. Very effective, three classes of existing anti-inflammatory are however some side effects: bone loss, cardiovascular and renal risk, stomach ulcers? However, other complementary therapies help reduce the doses of these treatments have become classics.
Other weapons against rheumatic pain
- The anti-arthritic actions of slow (or Aasal): used to protect the remaining cartilage. The Aasal are effective after a few weeks or months. Soy, avocado or cartilage extracts or plants, they have few side effects.
- Viscosupplementation: the injection of hyaluronic acid, a viscous fluid in the knee or hip lubricates the joint. This technique allows to control the rheumatic pain, reduce stiffness and stabilize osteoarthritis for several months.
- The TENS or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation: painless electrical stimulation performed through the skin block the passage of information to painful spinal and brain.
- Other techniques such as relaxation, hypnosis or acupuncture effectively complement the arsenal of painkillers.
Spa treatments and physical activity …
Ancestral remedy, spa treatments temporarily relieve rheumatic pains. ”Spa treatments can often reduce or suspend for several months the anti-pain side effects heavy,” said Dr. Sichère. Similarly, the regular practice of sport is a real anti-pain. Indeed, physical activity increases production of endorphins and strengthens muscles, which protects the joints.”From the onset of rheumatic pain, we must react quickly. Beyond the disability, they may be the warning signal of inflammation that causes destruction of articular cartilage, “says Dr. Sichère. Rheumatic pains should never be overlooked?
Acupuncture and pain
International studies have demonstrated the efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of osteoarthritis. It would reduce up to 40% of the pain. Beware, the effects of acupuncture should be affected by the third session, otherwise it means that this method is not effective on you.
Relaxation and music …
Breathing exercises or relaxation relax stiff muscles, reducing joint pain. Similarly, a recent study found that listening to music for an hour each day reduced pain by 21% on average!Patients felt less constrained in their daily lives and are more easily managed pain
