Different Pulse Sites

Pulse is the regular throbbing of the arteries due to the contraction of the heart.

The following are the different Pulse Sites:

1. TEMPORAL

It is used routinely for infants or if radial pulse is not accessible.

2. CAROTID

It is used routinely for infants and during shock or cardiac arrest where other peripheral pulses are too weak to be palpated. It can also be used to assess cranial circulation.

3. APICAL

It can be used to assess apical-radial deficit.

4. BRACHIAL

It is used to check pulse in cardiac arrest for infants and to assess lower arm circulation.

5. RADIAL

It is used to assess the character of peripheral pulses.

6. ULNAR

It is used to assess the circulation to the ulnar site of the hand and in performing Allen’s test.

7. FEMORAL

It is used to assess the circulation to the legs.

8. POPLITEAL

It is used to assess the circulation to the legs.

9. POSTERIOR TIBIAL

It is used to assess the circulation to the legs.

10. DORSALIS PEDIS

It is used to assess the circulation to the feet.
