Do You Like to Drink Alcohol?

The effects of drinking alcohol when also taking antibiotics.

If you combine alcohol with various antibiotics there can be some bad effects. It can cause dizziness, an upset stomach, drowsiness or worse. There will always be a warning on the label if you shouldn’t mix alcohol with antibiotics. Certain prescribed drugs can bring you some sickness you didn’t anticipate.

If you are taking antibiotics such as mentronidazole, tinidazole, or Bactrim then you shouldn’t mix it with alcohol. This could cause a severe reaction to your system including nausea and vomiting, rapid heart rate and shortness of breath. Alcohol tends to reduce your energy. Therefore, even if the antibiotics are safe to take alongside alcohol it is recommended you don’t since it only slows down the healing process from your illness.

Keep in mind that the antibiotics have to travel through your bloodstream in order to reach the area that is infected. If you take alcohol with the drug it cannot be as effective plain and simple. There are other medications that are given aside from antibiotics such as medication to treat high blood pressure. If taking alcohol with this type of medication it could cause you severe dizziness and even fainting when you try to stand.

There are some cold medicines and mouthwashes that seem to have some alcohol in them and are not recommended to take along with antibiotics. Various antihistamines that treat allergic symptoms and insomnia cannot be taken with alcohol either. It can intensify sedation. For example, if the antihistamine causes you to be drowsy then taking it with alcohol can cause you to go into a deep sleep for a longer time. This could also cause excessive dizziness and sedation.

Think about how many side effects are usually caused by taking only the antibiotics. If you decide to drink alcohol with the drug it is only going to cause you more problems, prolong your illness, and simply make you sick. You need to think twice when deciding to combine the two together and recognize the possible damage you could do to your body.
