Lasik
A brief description of Lasik eye surgery.
LASIK is eye surgery that permanently changes the shape of the cornea (the clear covering on the front of the eye) so you do not have to use glasses or contact lenses anymore.
LASIK is commonly used for patients with myopia(nearsightness) and hyperopia(farsightness), but can possibly be used on other vision problems.
It is an outpatient procedure that takes from 10 to 15 minutes, and it is a painless procedure with a high success rate.
To be a good candidate for LASIK:
- You should be at least 18 years old (prefered 21).
- You should not have this procedure if you are pregnant or breastfeeding .
- your eye vision has to be stable. Nearsightedness may continue to increase in some patients until their mid to late 20s.
- You should be in good general health.
Risks may include:
- Corneal infection
- Corneal scarring Decreased distance vision at high altitudes
- Dry eyes
- Glare or haloes
- Light sensitivity
- Night driving problems
- Patches of red or pink in the white of the eye
- Reduced vision
- Scratching
The good news is that a new eye drop Brimonidine tartrate is available to ease the appearance of halos or night vision complications associated with post-laser eye surgery.
