Medical Breakthrough: Finally, a Cure for HIV Patients?

A medical breakthrough in HIV; a man was functionally cured of HIV. Does this give a ray of hope to all the 33.3 million people affected by HIV worldwide? Who was this man; how was he functionally cured of HIV? Know them here…

The latest buzz in the Internet is about the first man who was functionally cured of HIV. Functionally cured, what is it? Does this tell us about a great medical breakthrough? Can all HIV patients now be relieved and hope they too can be cured?

First man to be functionally cured of HIV

Timothy Ray Brown is the first man to be functionally cured of HIV. He had both leukemia and HIV and is now functionally cured of HIV. How he was functionally cured of HIV?

Timothy Ray Brown, “The Berlin Patient”

Timothy Ray Brown was forced to undergo two stem cell transplant as leukemia spread through his bone marrow; when then stem cell transplant was done, it was from a donor who was immune to HIV. This is the secret behind the functional cure of HIV. When the transplant took place it not only treated his leukemia, but also helped him to get rid of HIV. He was given the nickname, “The Berlin Patient.”

Can a person be immune to HIV?

Is there a way for a person to be immune to HIV? How was this possible for Timothy’s donor? Scientists have two possible reasons for a person to be immune to HIV; they are:

  1. 1% of Caucasians are immune to HIV as this trait is been passed by ancestors who are immune to plague.
  2. Trait passed by ancestors immune to smallpox-like disease.

According to Timothy’s doctor Gero Huetter, “He has no replicating virus and he isn’t taking any medication. And he will now probably never have any problems with HIV.”

Finally, a cure for all HIV patients?

Does this functional cure of HIV give hope to all HIV patients? The truth is “NO.” According to scientists, there is every possibility of bone marrow transplant becoming fatal and it is definitely not possible to apply the same technique to all the 33.3 million people affected worldwide with HIV.

Even though it is not possible to replicate what doctors did to Timothy, it definitely gives a hope to those affected with HIV.

Other medical breakthrough in HIV treatment

It is a fact that replication of stem cell transplant of Timothy is impossible; there are other medical breakthroughs in HIV treatment. One such breakthrough is anti-retroviral drugs, but this is a bit expensive.

Whether it is anti-retroviral drugs or stem cell transplant, they both are expensive and not affordable to the common man who is affected by HIV; will there be a medical breakthrough in the field of HIV that is within the reach of the common man? Let us wait to see what medicine field is in store for HIV patients…

  8. Interesting.. We know how to prevent HIV but I have never heard of anyone immune to it.

  9. Wonderful article! This is quite an achievement in the fight against HIV. It sounds very promising/

  10. As a scientist I can tell you that it’s not at all a feasible option for future cures. Bone marrow transplants are extremely difficult – the two patients must be an absolutely 100% perfect match, which is much harder than it is in blood donations etc. As you point out, only 1% of the population are HIV resistant, and so the chances of finding a resistant donor who is a perfect match are close to zero. You could successful expect to treat maybe a few hundred of the 40 million sufferers this way at best.
The best hope we have at the moment is to take a patients own bone marrow (a guaranteed match) and genetically engineer it to be HIV resistant (a bit like GM crops) – sadly though this is difficult and expensive, and so will take many more years to develop.

  11. Gracie’s idea sounds interesting. by doing more research, they will be able to apply the results of his case to develop a cure.

  12. A very good health article– but I still believe there will be no cure– there’s no money in the cure the money is in the medication :)

  13. This research sounds promising, however, further research needs to be done before a cure is established. A very good topic you have chosen to elaborate on.

  14. Good News for many…
