Pepto-Bismol: For Gastrointestinal Relief

Pepto-Bismol contains Bismuth subsalicylate, an active ingredient used to treat symptoms associated with upset stomach.

According to studies, Bismuth subsalicylate is an anti-diarrhea medication and antacid used to treat diarrhea, nausea, heartburn, indigestion and other temporary symptoms of upset stomach. The active ingredient, bismuth, is what makes the original Pep to Bismol formula a medium pink color. There is also the new Cherry flavor Pep to Max with five ingredients and twice the original strength of regular pep to.

Pep to Bismol is currently produced by the Proctor and Gamble Company in the United States and Canada. According to studies, pregnant or nursing women shouldn’t take it because small amounts are excreted in breast milk and pose a risk of Reye’s syndrome in children. In addition, Pep to Bismol shouldn’t be given to a child nor teenager with a fever, flu symptoms or chicken pox. Because salicylates can cause serious and fatal complications, check with your doctor first if you are pregnant before taking this medication.

Whether it is an over-the counter drug or prescription, you should always read the labels on the back of the medicine. If you have stomach ulcers or intestinal bleeding, you should not take Pep to Bismol. And if you are allergic to aspirin or any extra-strength medication, it is a good idea to check with your health practitioner first before using this or any other product.
