Pill Splitting Saves Money, But is It Right for You?

Pill splitting is a money saving option for many patients, but not all prescription drugs are good candidates for splitting in half.

Pill splitting is the latest trend to save money on prescription medicine. If you are unfamiliar will the pill splitting trend, it works like this; your doctor writes you a prescription for twice the dosage amount of medications that you take on a regular basis, or the prescription is written half the number of pills but at double strength. You then split the pills before you take them, giving you twice as much medication for the same insurance co-pay.

Pill splitting enables patients to receive a two month supply of prescription medicine for the price of month’s insurance co-pay. It’s a good money saving option for prescription medicine, but you must talk to your doctor and pharmacist to find out if your particular medication is right for pill splitting.

Not all medicines can be split. Medicine that comes in capsule form is obviously not going to be good for pill splitting, and certain cancer drugs are not good pill splitting candidates.

If you do use the pill splitting method to save money, be sure to use a tool designed specifically for the purpose of pill splitting so you can divide your pill exactly in half.
