Why People Crush Their Pills and Medications
Some people have a hard time swallowing any form of pills. It doesn’t matter if it is an aspirin, a herbal medication, a cough and cold medication or even a prescribed medication. Some people will gag or have muscle spasms that prevent them from swallowing any form of pills.
I have talked people too over the years that have had either of these problems swallowing pills. Some even told me they had a fear of choking on the pill they are taking. A few others told me that was the way their mother gave them their medications as a child and continued taking any type of pill this way.
During one recent conversation one lady was wanting to know what else she cold take besides Vitamin C for a cold. They brought up Echinacea for her to take. She asked if it came in a chewable form, which it does. The lady that mentioned it told her not taking the chewable form was best for her because of its effectiveness.
The conversation continued into how else she could take the Echinacea because she felt embarrassed because she couldn’t swallow the pills. Another lady mentioned that she crushes all her pills because she has the same problem of not being able to swallow pills.
The one lady that brought up crushing the pills said she does it with the Echinacea, Tylenol, and any other pill form of medications she takes. She said that she panics when she tries to take the pills in their natural form.
Another lady mentioned the gel form and opening them up and putting them into water to take them. Another one mentioned she had opened the gel style capsules and dumped the contents into a spoonful of pudding to take them.
It was also mentioned that Activia Lite would work as well for taking the crushed vitamins, aspirins, ibuprofen, Echinacea, Vitamin C, any other type of over the counter medication or medications from your doctor. It was suggested to put it in one spoonful of whatever it is you are eating and use the rest to wash the pills down.
Others I have talked to have mentioned dissolving their pills in a tablespoon of water or juice and taking it as if you were taking cough syrup. Then drink some water after taking the pills as suggested on the bottle or by your doctor.
Others have also said they have dissolved their pill form medications in a quarter cup of milk, water or juice. Then drank the dissolved pills down and followed by at least a half cup more of liquids.
While these are just a few suggestions on how to take pills if you have reasons you are unable to swallow them, just experiment with other foods and beverages to help you “make the medicine go down.”
