Does The Skeleton Have a Play in Male Fertility?

Does the skeleton really have a play in the fertility process, and is it only for males?

According to Gerard Karsenty, M.D, Ph.D, the chair of the Department of Genetics and Development at Columbia University Medical Center, the skeleton in male mice has been known to be linked to fertility. Of course, this would make sense as people with chronic joint issues and bone issues have less sex, decreasing fertility. But it goes further than that. It has been found that Osteocalcin, a hormone secreted by the bone, helps to regulate male fertility. It has been found that mice who did not have this hormone secreted from their bones were poor breeders. It works by increasing the amount of testosterone in the system, it has been discovered that if you inject Osteocalcin in mice, their testosterone levels will also rise, but if you remove it, testosterone levels drop. And because testosterone is secreted by the testicles and is known to have a great effect on fertility, it increase the fertility of mice. This has not yet been known in humans yet, more studies will have to be done to show this in human beings.

There is no evidence as of yet that shows a link between female bones and fertility. It has been linked though that bone mass and estrogen are related, that is why many females get osteoporosis after starting menopause. More research should be done to see if there is any relationship between the bones and female fertility, but as of yet no evidence has surfaced for this conclusion. This will be a important discovery in the medical field of bone health in men as well as fertility issues.
