Man Boobs: What They are, and How to Get Rid of Them

Generally, like most women, men are also conscious of their body image. In recent times, we have become aware of the term “man Boobs” or “man cans”. These are descriptions for breast tissue or fatty deposits around the chest area, which protrude to give the appearance of breasts.

No, the condition exists. The medical term for one form of man boobs is Gynecomastia, this condition can develop in different age goups of males, from puberty upwards.  The shape of the breast is small round and can be quite tender.  Another form of ‘man boobs’ is excessive fat depositing around the male breast area.

Where do my man boobs come from?

The sources of man boobs can vary, depending on your circumstances, here are some typical examples of from where Gynecomastia develops:

  • Imbalances of hormone between the male testosterone and female estrogen
  • Side effects of Steroids and some types of medication
  • Chronic diseases
  • Street drugs

The second form of man boobs, excessive fat, is the result of an unhealthy diet, causing the fatty build up in the make breast area.

What should I do next?

The first thing is to get a medical evaluation from you GP to try and find the source of your man boobs.  Your GP should be able to determine the type of condition. It’s important to establish the cause for efficient treatment.  If you are a teenager you may get referred to a paedtrician, especially if you are entering puberty.

What types of treatments are available?

If you have Gynecomastia or excessive fat causing man boobs there is hope and treatment. You will have to make a choice how to deal with them. Here are some examples of treatments:

  • Liposuction, cosmetic surgery for excessive fat
  • Hormonal medication
  • Lippodisolve, non-surgical procedure using an injected dissolving agent

Are there any ways to disguise my man boobs?

Man boobs can be very embarrassing for males who have concerns about their body image. There are a number of interim steps you can take while finding a treatment.

  • Avoid placing yourself in situations where you or others become conscious of your condition
  • Where clothes and fabric which will distract peoples eyes away from your chest
  • Avoid wearing types of fabric material which may attract attention
  • Build up and tone upper body muscles to reduce the appearance of your breasts
  • Seek counselling to help come to terms with your situation

The good news for men, there is treatment for your man boobs. The biggest hurdle is making the first steps to deal with the problem.
