Viagra, The Impotence Drug Linked to Deafness
Can Viagra, the impotence drug and other PDE-5 inhibitors make you deaf? Find out what this research says about PDE-5 inhibitors and their relation with deafness or sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL)…
A recent statistics say that around 30 percent of men suffer from erectile dysfunction and majority of them use various impotence drugs to combat erectile dysfunction. Viagra, the impotence drug that was launched a decade ago is taken by many people who suffer from erectile dysfunction; do you know Viagra can make you deaf?

Why research on PDE-5 inhibitors relation with hearing loss?
The research was initiated as many who take Viagra and similar impotence drugs started to report about sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL). What is SSHL? It is a rare, but an emergency condition where the damage is done to the inner ear structures; there is every possibility of permanent deafness or hearing loss. It is believed that around two-thirds of the population taking PDE-5 drugs reported SSHL within 24-hours of consumption.
How the research was done?
As there was growing body of evidences indicating hearing loss associated with Viagra and various PDE-5 (phosphodiesterase-5) drugs, doctors decided to study the relationship between impotence drugs and deafness. As a first step, researchers contacted various pharmacovigilance agencies across North America, South America, East Asia, Europe and Australasia; they requested reports related to hearing loss and PDE-5 drugs.
This research was carried out by doctors from Charing Cross Hospital, London, Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire, and Royal Marsden Hospital, London.
According to Dr Afroze Shah Khan, of Charing Cross Hospital, “Medical practitioners involved in the prescription of these drugs need to be vigilant about this potential side-effect.”
Health regulatory boards – what do they say?
Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) says Viagra leading to deafness is very rare.
Few researchers are not quite convinced about Viagra linking to hearing loss, but they say that the chain of chemical reactions triggered by Viagra could have lead to sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL).
Regardless of whether PDE-5 inhibitors induce deafness or not, it is always advisable to take them with a medical practitioner’s advice. Are you concerned about side effects of Viagra and other PDE-5 drugs? If yes, contact your medical practitioner right away.

Good information, it’s too bad that the side effects of all drugs are not well documented, however, some may take them anyway! I understand the risk when necessary, but for this kind of drug I see no need in taking the risk, it is not a life or death issue!

Sorry I know this isn’t funny but it made me laugh to read the title of this. I’ve heard a side effect is it can make you have blue temporarily blue vision but I haven’t heard about this side effect! That would definitely be something to deter me from doing it if I was a guy….at least until there’s more conclusive research.
