Computer game addiction causes ‘Paranoid Psychosis’
An article about a 16 year old boy from Singapore who suffers from ‘Paranoid Psychosis’ due to excessive computer gaming.
Singapore’s New Paper on Sunday reported that a 16 year old computer game addict has developed an altered mental state, according to psychiatrists. The teenager who started playing computer games at the age of 8 has spent his evenings and weekends for the last 5 years obsessively playing violent games.
At the age of 12 he became violent when his parents tried to put an end to his obsessive gaming addiction. Then at the age of 14 the boy began hearing voices and clicking noises, imagining that his neighbours were spying on him and taking photos. He was given medication to supress the voices which only served to make him more agitated.
More recently things came to a head when the 16 year old who refused to go to school was found by neghbours, sitting on the ledge of his storey apartment window. This led to his parents having to take unpaid leave from work to watch over him 24 hours a day.
In August he was diagnosed with ‘Paranoid Psychosis’ and was given a course of medication which has improved his condition although he is yet to return to school.

My son is 16 1/2. He has been what I would definitely call addicted to video games for most of his life. We thought it was ok and that he was just a little obsessive. Well recently right after playing Modern Warfare 2 for 4 days straight without much sleep and then smoking marijuana he went completely psychotic for over a week. He is taking Depacote and zyprexa and is doing well considering the condition he was in. The doctors say that it was from insomnia and marijuana and deny that the games have anything to do with it. Many of us in the family are having a hard time with that. If it’s true that these games are doing this or even having something to do with it I want the world to know. Good article.

I have had psychosis, it is a terrible thing to get, even though I am better now, I do play a ton of games and have formed an addiction to them, but at the same time I had been put on a medication they said was the primary cause of it, but the clicking noise, that is sooooo true.

Alright one problem there is the parents looked to remove the child in front of the computer immediately without taking any steps. If they tried shortening the child’s playing time by the month, it would’ve gone better.
But past is past. I just hope the kid is recovering now. Man I hope he’s in school already.
