Depression and The Elderly
A brief discussion on Depression and the Elderly. The meaning and significance of Depression in the elderly and the importance of getting treatment.
Depression is not a normal part of getting old. Just because you may find yourself in the dreaded group of the “elderly” doesn’t mean it’s OK that you feel sad for a longer stretch of time, day after day, have lost interest in things you used to enjoy and are having difficulties with your sleep(for more on the signs and symptoms of depression, please view:http://healthmad.com/mental-health/signs-and-symptoms-of-depression/ or visit the official NIMH site online.
Inspite of the increasing awareness on Depression, its causes and symptoms, the illness continues to be widely underrecognized and undertreated.Further, Depression is often found to co-exist with other serious illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, and Parkinson’s disease, which may result in Depression being overshadowed and ignored. It is likely, that even health care professionals may mistakenly conclude that depression is a normal consequence of age and other illnesses.
However, research indicates that Depression is an important illness and and not a normal consequence of age and/or age related illnesses. Treating depression has shown to improve the outcome of treating the other co-occurring illnesses as well as enhance the quality of the person’s life.
To conclude: Depression is an illness.Depression can be Treated.Depression is not a normal process of ageing.Treating Depression can improve the outcome of treating other illnesses. And, getting treatment for your depression, whatever your age, would mean a better quality of life for you and your loved ones.

Good research. There is so much to be said about this topic…it can hit any generation, not just the elderly. In fact, I think it is even more common with teenagers than middle age persons. But, the important thing is that it can be treated!
