Dreams: All Needed to be Known
We spend about six years of our life dreaming, and yet we still don’t know a lot about the process of dreaming.
We all know that dreams have all of the elements that we are familiar with in every day life. Dreams come from a procedure involved in sleep called REM, which stands for Rapid Eye Movements. Dreams can some times be vivid and very real and scary when that occurs it is called a night terror, which occurs in NREM. NREM stands for Non Rapid Eye Movements. This process had fascinated scientist since life began, but the purpose for content and biological have not been really understood. The process of dreaming is so fascinating to scientist that there is a field of dream study and research called Oneirology.
During REM sleep the brain is as active as it would be if the body where awake. The origins of dreams have an unknown origin in the brain, or if there are more then one Origin. Neurotransmitters are completely cut off until the end of the REM cycle. This is a good thing because it work out that this process paralyzes the body so we don’t act out our dreams.
REM, as previously stated, stands for Rapid Eye Movement and is the cycle that dream occurs during. REM was discovered in 1953 by a PhD student named Eugene Aserinsky, he discovered REM while operating on his advisor. He noticed that the advisors eyes where moving rapidly in closed eyelids. He then determined the brain wave activity while the eyes move using a Polygraph. He started a clinic where people could go and be subjects. He would attach wires to the head and he would tell the subjects to go to sleep. Even he observes the rapid eye movement he would wake the subject up. For example during a session he woke a person who was crying out during this sleep cycle, this confirmed that dreams where occurring. The advisor and Aserinsky published the ground-breaking discovery later that year.
Dream can also represent repressed memories from the past. Eugen Tarnow stated that dreams are long lasting proof of long-term memory even while awake. This hypothesize is basically restating one frued made called dream works, which will be discussed latter. The strangeness of dreams can be answered by yet another topic in which will be discussed later.
Now we get to the interesting part of the article where we determine the content of a dream and what it means. When emotion is in dreams it tends to be negative more than positive. Some American men tend to dream of aggression in the work place.
