Help for Anxiety and Depression

Mindfulness: An alternative and simple way to treat depression and anxiety.

Mindfulness is a form of meditation that can be adapted to anything that you do, but I find it very practical and useful to use while walking.

If you have the time, or the inclination, choose a nice open place to walk so that you can breathe in the fresh air as you do it. If you aren’t lucky enough to be able to do this, any place with do. The object is to be totally aware of every step, every movement that you make.

Feel your feet as you lift them up from the ground and feel the sensation as you place them back on the ground. Do this with every step.

Breathe, and feel the air going down into your lungs. Sense the blood coursing round your body and feel your heart pumping. Concentrate on your body.

“Mindfulness” is being mindful and aware of everything that is going on.

It is a form of meditation that is excellent for putting yourself back in tune and in touch with your body. Anyone suffering from strains and stress will find this an excellent way to take a breather from all that.

Mindfulness, which is an important element in Buddhism, can be applied to many different activities, or just to “sitting and being”. It is a technique in which we become totally aware of thoughts and actions at the particular time. In recent years this technique has been gathering more credence and interest in the west. Psychiatrists are looking at it as an alternative treatment to drug therapy for depression and anxiety.
