Probably every one of us experienced a bad and confusing dream. Actually, many people around the world struggle with these stressful dreams almost every night. Luckily, there are ways to get rid of them. To succeed, you need to learn how to avoid bad dreams.

Probably every one of us experienced a bad and confusing dream. Actually, many people around the world struggle with these stressful dreams almost every night. Luckily, there are ways to get rid of them. To succeed, you need to learn how to avoid bad dreams.

Identify the cause

The first step is to identify the most likely cause of your bad dreams. This can be hard for some people. However, usually there is an obvious explanation and all it takes is to reflect on your daily life a bit. Stress, bad eating habits, unresolved issues and spending too much time doing certain activity are the most likely causes. However, help of a psychologist may be needed in some cases. There is no need to feel ashamed though. This is a normal issue and has nothing to do with you being crazy or something.

Eliminate the cause

The second step is to eliminate the cause behind your bad dreams. Whether it is the stress or something else, try to correct that aspect of your life. That extra effort is always worth it.

If stress is the problem, then try to slow down and eliminate it. Of course, it is unlikely that you will get rid of all the stress that poisons your life. However, it is entirely possible to limit it to such an extent that bad dreams will stop occurring on regular basis.

Correcting your eating habits is even easier. Yet, it will bring you many other benefits besides fewer unpleasant dreams. All you need to do is make sure that you do not do to sleep with full or empty stomach. Being half-empty (or half-full if you are optimist) is the best way to avoid many bad dreams.

Unresolved issues and problems are another frequent cause of bad dreams. Your subconscious mind continues to focus on those problems even after you fall asleep. This fact often gets reflected in person’s dreams. At some times, this can lead to extremely vivid dreams that are often confusing and pessimistic. You can avoid this by spending last hours of your day focusing on things you like. Read a book, watch a movie, play a computer game or do anything else that makes your mind forget all those unresolved issues. Bad dreams might occur anyway, however they are less likely to do so.

Another fact is that focusing on any activity for extended periods of time; especially before you go to sleep, can also cause confusing and unpleasant dreams. It is always best to avoid watching disturbing movies, playing a computer game for longer than an hour or two or doing anything similar before sleep.

Keep up the new lifestyle

Certainly, you changed your lifestyle at least to some extent if you got rid of the bad dreams. However, you should make sure not to return to the old one. Bad dreams will certainly come back if you forget to avoid the causes behind them. Of course, there will be some nightmares every now and then anyway. But, that is no reason for you to give up all the effort. It is always better to get a bad night’s sleep once in a while than to wake up screaming nearly every day.

To conclude, getting rid of bad dreams can be relatively easy for most people. Even knowing how to avoid bad dreams does not guarantee that they will never occur again. However, bad dreams can become much less frequent.

  6. very good advice, Michal. I have never thought that dreams can be controlled or improved, but I will take your advice, as I ever had bad dreams and when woke up, with tears/sweat, and I said to myself “lucky, just a dream”.
