How to Keep Your Mind Sharp

Everyone wants to keep his or her mind sharp for as long as possible. We all know the older we get, the better the chances that we will suffer from Alzheimer’s or dementia. Since there is no known cure, there are ways to keep your mind sharp.

Read Books

Reading books is a good way to keep your mind working.  If books are too expensive for you, you can always rent them from the library.  Once you’ve finished the book, you can discuss it with someone.  This will force your mind to remember what you’ve read.  My sister and I always tell each other about the books we read whether the other one has read it or not.

Watch Movies

This tip is similar to reading books.  You can discuss the movies with family or friends.  If you don’t have anyone to talk about movies with, you can write a review.  You can even write it for Triond.  As my faithful readers know, I have written some movie reviews for Triond so you can too.  It’s not that hard and it forces you to remember the movie.

Writing

This will also keep your mind functioning because you have to keep thinking while you’re writing.

Take a Class/Learn Something New

You can always learn a new language or a skill to keep your brain active.  If you don’t want to go to college to learn or it’s too expensive, you can check out your local libraries or community centers to see what classes you can take.  I go to my local library to get free sign language lessons.  I also teach myself sign language at home.  In addition to sign language, I am teaching myself Spanish.  If you don’t have time to go out and learn, you can buy the books and learn at home.  You can also search online for the courses.  There are sites that allow you to learn online for free.

Playing Brain Teaser Games

This can be fun and helpful at the same time.  Games like Sudoku, Kakuro, Cryptograms, Scramblers, Crossword puzzles, etc. keep your mind working.  They force you to think in order to figure out the answers.

Exercise

You should have known this one was coming. LOL!  Exercise keeps blood flowing to your brain and it makes it easier to think.  Whenever you dread having to exercise, remember that it’s a way to keep your mind functioning.

These tips may not prevent Alzheimer’s or dementia, but they will keep your brain active and that may slow down both diseases.
