How To Manage People with Suicidal Ideations

The world is increasingly becoming a difficult place to live in and it is not surprising that many people prefer to take the suicidal route to end their lives.

With the social transformations today that have occasioned so many related social problems including break up of families, poverty, wars, natural disaster, love and passions, dying by the suicidal route is quite rampant.

 Research carried out in about 60 counties by the by the World Health Organization (WHO) reveal that out of  245,404 adults studied,upto 3.2% were found to have experienced depression over a year and depression is not only the most difficult to bear, but it is also the most common trigger factor behind suicidal ideations. The researchers called for more alertness on the part of Doctors in the diagnosis and treatment of the condition, given  that it is fairly easy to recognize and treat. 

Suicide might appear as an individual problem, yet for  family and friends affected by suicide or attempted suicide, the emotional impact may last for many years. To help a suicidal person better, there is need to understand what causes suicidal thoughts.

Why people resort to suicide

By the time a person gets the desire to take his/her own lives, the following considerations would have featured very strongly on their mind to reinforce suicidal thoughts lingering within. Many commit suicide for the following reasons:             

  •  To escape from loneliness, depression, academic or work related difficulties, financial pressures, and conflicts with people.
  • To punish survivors who are likely to feel hurt by guilt. This is common to teens who want punish their strict parents and lovers whose relationship have soured.
  • To manipulate others and gain attention using suicidal threats
  • To join a loved one who has died. This happens where grief continues endlessly and the bereaved sinks into depression
  • To avoid suffering and effects of a dreaded disease that is incurable like HIV or cancer.

Suicidal ideations can be classified as; active and passive. Active ideation is when a person has a desire and a concrete plan to die while passive ideation is when a person has the desire but no plan to bring about death. In all the categories, there is need to be alert to the suicidal messages and signals if lives are to be saved.

How to manage persons showing suicidal Signals

Since most victims give clues, suicidal persons can best be handled if one notes the following;

1. Mention of suicide in their conversation . in active ideation, the person will have plans of how to die. In some cases the person loses sleep. Capitalize on these messages and provide psychiatric help.

2. Do not blame or judge the person, avoid any argument or preaching sessions with them, just listen to them

3. Inform a close friend or family member so that they can keep close watch on them.

4. Seek help from a counselor or Psychiatrist as soon as possible.

5. A person with suicidal ideation may not know they need help, any attempt at punishing, shaming or belittling them only makes them withdraw and execute their plans behind close doors. Lead them to where help can easily be got. Be extremely understanding-in so doing, you could save a life.
