When someone has power or authority he can issue commands that others must respect, but they can not make you think and feel what they want. The interesting thing whit hypnosis is that other can make you really feel or think what he wants. For example, a man who is hypnotized can shake as if he is cold, or perspire as if he’s hot, become pale as to be scared of something, etc. It can even hate his favorite meal or enjoy what he has until recently been disgusting.
That interesting ability to influence on other people, was also known in the early civilizations when people were using hypnosis as a form of treatment.
From the very beginning, hypnosis was felt as somewhat mystical discipline, and this image gave it “the founder of” hypnosis Franz Anton Mesmer, who lived at the turn of the 18th in 19th century. He began to use hypnosis to mentally disturbed people. Because of him hypnosis was also called “mesmerism.” But Mesmer did not fully understood hypnosis. He felt that this was some kind of force which he called “animal magnetism” and believed that this force exceeds the hypnotist to the person being hypnotized.
Because of this view most other scientists thought that “Mesmerism” is just ordinary trick.
About 100 years later the English doctor James Braid approached the problem closer and examined it on a scientific level. The concepts as “hypnosis” and “hypnotism” came from him and since then become a term of study of many scientists. The word comes from the Greek word hypnosis meaning sleep .
But hypnosis is not that mistical as manny think.
We could say that it is quite natural, almost daily experience.
For example, when watching a good movie or read an interesting book that totally envelops us, when we hear someone’s lecture in which we input or even when we listen to music we love and with which we can wander in thought – we are kind of hypnotized.
We are actually hypnotized every time we manage to fully concentrate and when we are fully captivate with something that completely won our attention, so much that we manage to ignore the reality that surrounds us.
That is condition in which we change our perception and our awareness.
And such state is, according to experts, very useful: it enables us to mobilize and take advantage of a mindset to which, in full consciousness, we can not reach.
In this way we can, for example, improve are public performance or establish balance easier.
In this way some artists brings out the best out of themselfs while creating their works.
The actors often use this condition to better enter in the role they should be play.
Hypnosis is used in psychotherapy and medicine.
Here it may be helpful:
- In treating nerve disorders such as anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social phobias, panic attacks.
- In relieving headaches, back pain, pain caused by various tumors.
- The psychological preparation for surgery or childbirth.
- Hypnotic trance as a substitute for anesthesia in patients who are allergic to anesthetics classic – in a state of hypnotic trance they tolerate the painmore easily .
- In the treatment of addiction:
smoking, alcoholism, drug addiction, etc. ..
Although it can be useful I can’t help to wonder: isn’t it a kind of mind control that can be used even if we don’t want it and don’t know it? Little bit scarry I think…
