Moods: Confidence and Self-esteem
Description of how moods occur and how these affect our confidence and self-esteem relative to mental wellbeing.
How we feel is controlled by our moods. How these are triggered in each of us can be a complex combination of learned behaviour, genetic predisposition, brain chemistry, individual emotional tendencies and past or present issues that are still unresolved
Many conditions or illnesses can cause low, high or changing moods that can be painful or difficult to manage, not only for us but also our friends, family or carers.
The label we may be given with a diagnosis is not important. What is important are the symptoms we experience and the effect they have on our lives and those around us.
We may not have a specific diagnosis, whether we have sought one or not.
The medical profession rarely diagnose us correctly, at least initially, or very promptly. Diagnosis is very much a “crisis driven” event and can take years! We may not even feel we want a diagnosis at this time; No matter.
Engaging with others who understand us can be a very positive and therapeutic experience.
Self-Esteem and Confidence
Many everyday problems have to do with lack of self-worth, self-esteem or self-confidence.
We may constantly doubt ourselves, convinced we are not worthy of good health, happiness, praise or reward.
We may sometimes be unable to tackle even the simplest of tasks.
These are very common symptoms of anxiety which can either be caused by depression or be a part of it.
These feelings may come from our childhood, perceived or actual failure and shortcomings in our life, disability or abnormality, perceived or actual. Feelings of loss from bereavement or family and other relationship issues can also be key issues.
Having to give up a job, vocation or way of life after many years can also cause intense feelings of loss as well as a loss of identity.
Any of the above difficulties may cause a sense of isolation, despair and even shame or guilt.
Talking and sharing with others who have experienced these things can begin the process of recovery.
